Book Description

Neufert's Architects' Data is an essential reference for the initial design and planning of a building project. It provides, in one concise volume, the core information needed to form the framework for the more detailed design and planning of any building project. Organised largely by building type, it covers the full range of preliminary considerations, and with over 6200 diagrams it provides a mass of data on spatial requirements.

Most illustrations are dimensioned and each building type includes plans, sections, site layouts and design details. An extensive bibliography and a detailed set of metric/ imperial conversion tables are included. Since it was first published in Germany in 1936, Ernst Neufert's handbook has been progressively revised and updated through 39 editions and many translations. This fourth English language edition is translated from the 39th German edition, and represents a major new edition for an international, English speaking readership.

Reviews of the Previous Edition:

"Neufert's Architects' Data was the first book I bought when I started my studies in architecture. It was invaluable for me then and it is still a useful aid in my designs."
—Cesar Pelli

"With this thorough rewrite Neufert has produced yet again an invaluable reference book."
The Architects' Journal

While it's only the fourth English edition, this work is a translation of the 39th German edition, and represents significant changes since the 3rd English edition.

It contains much that will be useful as a daily reference for the Architecture Student or practicing Architect, and is also a fascinating collection of information accessible to anyone interested in Architectural design.

The book does have a definite European view on things, and many of the designs and even things like dimensions for common spaces may be a bit different than one would find in an American book on the subject.

There's no fluff or wasted space in this book. It's detailed and to the point, and a pleasure to browse.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly comprehensive, with one flaw June 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Why did I bother paying all that tuition, when I could have just read this book?

When it comes to architectural concepts, this work is remarkably comprehensive - ranging from instructions on hand drafting (formerly basic, now esoteric), to ergononmics, to building management, to landscaping, to daylighting. There are later sections devoted to specific kinds of building (stadiums, farms, railroad stations), and the book as a whole really does mirror the experience of an architectural education, starting with the basics and ending with lots, and lots, and lots of specific examples.

But as with all gems, there is a flaw. The measurements are in metrics, almost exclusively. The discussion of rooms in the home notes that kitchens should ideally be located in the northeast or northwest, and that entryways should be big enough for people to take off their coats and shake hands. The ergonomics assumes people are closer to six feet than five. And so on.

The book is brilliant, and completely worth owning. Also painfully Euro-centric, however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who this book is for June 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
If you are an architect, this book will help you become familiar and polish up general descriptions of areas outside your normal expertise, at the 10,000 foot level. But it will be too introductory in your own specialization.

If you are a beginning architecture student, this book provides an excellent overview of architectural best practices, constraints, and measurements across the entire field.

If you work in the construction field without a professional architect's help, this book will be helpful to avoid major design mess ups in the planning stages.

If you are a general reader, this book is very interesting just to flip through and learn why buildings are designed the way they are. It is not too technical to follow.

So overall this book should be of interest to just about everyone, for different reasons!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful compendium of information May 30, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I can't describe how useful and interesting this book is for me. It is a must-have not only for architects, but for consultants, engineers, and anyone who is involved with the design phase of a project (or works with the designers). My present use for this is mainly in the transport arena (specifically roads) and the specifications in Neufert are a great companion to the AASHTO standards.

The projects and specs outlined in the book are very comprehensive, covering everything from the standard business/retail/residential type venues to healthcare venues, houses of worship, sports arenas and even agriculture. Although I don't deal with many of those venues directly, it was still hugely interesting to browse through the specs and data.

One of the best parts is the Basics chapter at the start of the book. It covers a wide range of definitions, conversion tables, symbols, dimensional basics -- a real treasure trove of info. That chapter along is worth getting this book.

My only complaint is that this is a paperback. As a reference text, it will get a lot of use (and abuse) which results in damage. After only a couple of days of use, my copy is already bent out of shape and a few pages are loose. A hard bound, or, better yet, a spiral bound format where you can open the book flat would be far more useful and practical. I also really, really wish the illustrations were larger. They are wonderful, but some are hard to see.

I won't deduct any stars for those issues since the information, data and specs are so good, but you'll want to be prepared to do some book repair work if this volume gets a good workout (and especially if it is used in the field).

Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brief review August 16, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This will be a brief review of this book, as most of the other reviewers have dug into the fine details that are inside. I originally thought this book might be more centered on residential buildings, even going back over the book description here on Amazon does not really state that it is or is not. I thought that the book would be very handy to explore the reasons that buildings or rooms are designed the way that they are and that if done correctly, will leave you with a good feeling. I am sure we have all been in a place that just does not "feel" right. There are approximately 30 pages dedicated to residential buildings. Even though I thought that all 590 pages would be about that topic, I feel very satisfied with the 30 I was given. The remainder of the book was still entertaining and informative and well worth it if you are interested.
