A Look Inside Architectural Drawing: A Visual Compendium of Types and Methods

Architectural Drawing
A picture plane is always perpendicular to the drawing surface and to the central line of sight, as shown in this example of a two-point perspective.

From the Publisher

This comprehensive book offers a rich visual resource of design-drawing styles and techniques. It covers tool fundamentals, letter, orthographic and paraline drawing, representational sketching, linear perspective drawing, perspective view development, and light, shade, and shadow, delineating and rendering entourage, diagramming, conceptual sketching, 3D modeling, and presentation formats. Hundreds of visual examples place technical instruction in a professional practice context enabling readers to see and understand the persuasive powers of drawing. Examples are clearly presented and grouped in chapters according to drawing type. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

In fact, they are essential for designers to understand and apply them so that they can visually communicate their ideas effectively.

Mr. Yee writes that he hoped users would be enticed into "browsing and wandering" in the volume.

I found this book to be incredably helpful for its in depth look at presentation styles and presentation drawings. There is also a huge section on orthographic and perspective drawings, how to see them and construct them.

This is one of the best recent books on architectural graphics. Rendow Yee's book is replete with illustrations from successfull architects as well as students which turned out to be an excellent way of presenting design work of various levels and generations. I would recommend this book as a reference for both professionals and students.

I come from a background where architectural drawing seemed unobtainable. When I started graduate school, I was apprehensive about my ability as an architect because I had always thought that I could not draw. With the help of this book (earlier edition) and my professor, I walked through the door, into the center of the beast. It was as if a light had been turned on in a dark corridor, and I could finally see myself and my potential. I have repeatedly gone back to this as a source to help broaden my potential and ability to realize my ideas on paper. It continues to be useful for any level of reader trying to improve their ability to draw. A must have for any architect!

Easy to understand, thorough examination of a range of methods used for architectural drawings. Clear, concise descriptions as well as clear graphics depicting methods and processes. Extremely detailed reading while avoiding the mash-up of other technical manuals.

To think and then to communicate requires language. Drawing is the foundational language for architecture and design in general. Hence the title of this volume.

The author's goal is to provide a primer of both the types and the methods of the graphic tools essential to visual communication. To do this he covers a lot of ground: From the basics of using the technique of sighting for free-hand drawing to examples of sophisticated web site portfolios.

Mr. Yee cautions that although he intends this reference work for use by those with little knowledge of geometry and math, as well as interns and advanced students and practicioners, it is NOT a handbook on how to acquire design skills.

The pages are artfully composed, not crowded though each one contains a lot of information via drawings, photos, and succinct descriptions and comments. Examples are of residential, business, and public spaces with many from beyond the United States. I especially liked the way the content of each page was printed in a vertical line at the edge of it.

This, the 4th edition, includes the new material of 1) an extensive section on how manual drawing and digital modeling can combine in design; and 2) suggestions for building a portfolio including examples from the simple to the elaborate.

Because this is a big, heavy book, likely to be well-used, it might have been prudent to have provided a hard covered edition as well as this paperback.

Mr. Yee writes that he hoped users would be enticed into "browsing and wandering" in the volume. That it's contents would stimulate, refresh, and inspire. For myself, I was indeed enticed and stimulated.
