Editorial Reviews

Review

Lesley Durbin's book is broad and far reaching, beyond what the title implies. She is thorough in her approach beginning with the introduction that covers tiles from medieval pavements to early 20th century interiors. The book is a reference resource for the conservation and restoration of tiles, an important tool for anyone engaged in the care and keeping of historic tiles in situ or for someone who may wish to remove tiles and care for them responsibly. There are many black and white images of tiles showing different types of damage as well as many before and after conservation pictures. All in all, I believe it to be a well-researched, useful publication for a select audience. - The Tile Heritage of America E-news

.it contains a wealth of useful information for anyone who is confronted with problems of deterioration, damage or detachment of tiles either inside or outside a building. This book has a number of very positive features. Firstly, the reader is always taken clearly and systematically through each stage of a conservation process; secondly, the chapters are organised around a series of sub-headings, which usefully serve to summarise the content that follows; and thirdly, the writing- while necessarily technically complex at times- is generally clear and easy to understand. The book concludes with a series of conservation case studies which clearly illuminate and contextualise much that has been previously discussed.clearly an important resource for any tile conservator.
