Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Carrying out his editorial task in good order, Sudjic cheers the architecture of Sir Richard Rogers, best known for the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Lloyd's of London's headquarters. The photographs of Rogers's buildings are bright and cheery. In contrast to the stereotype of an England and Europe of drizzle, we find these places to be ripe with blue skies and Rogers's chrome buildings. But even as this book succeeds in text, layout, and illustration to tout Rogers's reputation, it is hampered by the architecture itself. The buildings shown, whether as ideas in drawings and models or as finished structures, ultimately look more like X-rays revealing beams and duct work than actual places where people might work, study, move about, or spend time. Ever the booster, Sudjic only briefly mentions that some of this ugliness is the target of Prince Charles and his attacks on the modern monstrosities that mar London's profile. Overall, the book offers a capable, if forced, look at this well-known contemporary architect; recommended for larger architectural collections.?David Bryant, New Canaan P.L., Ct.
