Editorial Reviews

Review

"...looks to be a handy resource for post-secondary and graduate students looking to enter the field of architecture. Providing sections covering practical areas of in-depth professional advice and information, this reference tool does more than just encourage design principles and technical skills. The Architecture Student's Handbook of Professional Practice puts at a student's fingertips a thorough overview of what it takes to initiate a practice to highlights of typical operational functions which are integral parts of any firm large or small. A good beginners how-to-book for every architectural student to keep within reach." (chicagoarchitecturetoday.com; 1/09)

From the Back Cover

Defining The Practice Of Architecture For Students

Not simply an abridged or adapted student edition of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, Fourteenth Edition, this book has been specifically developed for today's architecture students. Recognizing its use as required reading in professional practice courses, this book contains knowledge specific to the needs of students and emerging professionals. In a noted departure, the publisher John Wiley & Sons and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as author, have named this book The Architecture Student's Handbook of Professional Practice.

Suitable for use as a professional practice course outline, content is organizedin four parts:

The Profession: the concepts of professionalism and professional development

Practice: developing and operating a practice as well as client relations

The Project: the construction, management, and closeout of projects

Contracts and Agreements: AIA Contract Documents

In developing The Architecture Student's Handbook, an advisory group of notedprofessional practice educators and practitioners reviewed the content of TheArchitect's Handbook to distill the content for students. Some content is taken directly from The Architect's Handbook, some is edited or condensed, and, significantly, unique content has been developed only for students. The Architecture Student's Handbook has a particular emphasis on integrated practice and integrated project delivery, with new content on research and evidence-based design that does not appear in The Architect's Handbook. At least a quarter of The Architecture Student's Handbook content is unique or significantly edited from the professional book.

With a CD-ROM that contains samples of AIA Contract Documents (more than 75 in all, in PDF format for Mac and PC computers) including those that released in 2007, The Architecture Student's Handbook of Professional Practice introduces a framework for students to understand all aspects of architectural practice.

This review is from: The Architecture Student's Handbook of Professional Practice (Paperback)
This is required reading for many professional practice courses and is very useful beyond school. The content is a compilation of articles from experts and very well written with essential information readily available in each chapter. I would highly recommend getting the book at the beginning of any architectural studies as it is the best measure of the actual business of architectural design.
