Should have been amazing....but wrong tracklisting, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Archives & Artifacts (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
Been looking forward to this for a long time it seems.
OK well this is the deal....Disc 1 "The Ultra-Violence" is simply one of the finest thrash metal albums ever. So, if you never bought it first time around (shame on you if you didn't) here it is again.
Unfortunately the end of disc 1 is where the problems begin (at least on my set. The final 3 tracks are SUPPOSED to be "Thrashers" / "Kill as One" / "The Ultra-Violence" from the LEGENDARY Kill As One demo 85. They are nowhere to be found.
It appears that pressing error was made on Rycodisc's part. Instead what you get for the final tracks on disc 1 are "Dehumanization" / "Silent Killer" / "Witches of Knave". which were SUPPOSSED to be the 3 bonus tracks on disc 2.
OK, if you're still with me here, it only gets more confusing. Disc 2 " Frolic Through the Park" ALSO has a pressing error. The 3 bonus tracks on this one are mislabeled also. What you end up getting are tracks 4, 5 & 6 on the Rarities CD #3.
So, you end up getting to hear "A passing Thought" / "Elegy" / "Aspirations" on both disc 2 & 3.
This whole deal was a HUGE disapointment for me. The "Kill as One" demo never apppears anywhere on this set. The packaging is rather weak in my opinion. No Lyrics sheets like were on the original pressings of The Ultra-Violence & Frolic Through the Park. There is some cool old gig flyers in the layouts...but why omit the lyrics?? It would have been real nice to hear some more info about the rarities CD also. Virtually no info is given beyond song titles....and God only knows if they are right given the tracklist errors with the other 2 discs.
In short...disc one "The Ultra-Violence"....a must have true thrash classic. Disc 2 "Frolic Through the Park"...solid album through overall not as aggressive as the debut. Somewhat more mature and experimental. Still some really great tracks. "Shores of Sin" & "3rd Floor" for starters. Disc 3 Rarities disc.....cool to hear, but honestly the majority was rather lackluster and forgetful. I can see why these songs never saw the light of day previously. Mostly for the diehard fans. Disc 4 the DVD....can't comment yet as I haven't watched it.
Hopefully Rycodisc has been made aware of the pressing errors and will correct it ASAP. I ended up returning my box set due to the errors. I do plan on buying it again if the errors are corrected for subsequent pressings.

If you dont already have the 1st two Death Angel cds or even if you do, buy this box set. Its definitely an improvement from when they were first released. The dvd is also very cool. It gives you more information as to what the band members used to be like. If you like Bay Area Thrash, Get this
