This is the best Archos tablet I've ever used and almost as good as any other tablet on the market as well. As with cell phones, choosing a tablet is a very personal endeavor. It all depends on what you like personally. Well, I like Android. Over the past year, I've had several Android tablets (I work in IT and test new devices to better help my users and being a geek, I like to play with new equipment). Up until the G9 released, my day to day tablet was an Archos 70; last year's model from them. It was a very good tablet for the price but not a top of the line product. I reviewed it on Amazon; go read that review for more info if you like. The single biggest problem with the 70 was that it didn't have enough RAM which resulted in lackluster performance; basically, it was a little sluggish and at times, very sluggish. But overall, I liked it very much and used it all the time.

Well, this new one from Archos is great! Archos increased the RAM by 50% (Archos, you need to go to 1GB or more!!!) which greatly improved the responsiveness of the device; add in the dual core CPU and you end up with a very nice product. The overall physical design is basically the same as their last generation tablets and they take a lot of hits from reviewers on the design that I think are undeserved. Their design is different to be sure but they still build a quality device. Hint to Reviewers: not every tablet needs to look like an iPad!!! The screen on the G9 is bright and of better quality than the last generation and works well.

I've found the G9 to be pretty stable; that wasn't true of Archos' last generation of tablets.

I got the 80 G9 as a gift for Xmas. I set up the tablet and upgraded the firmware as recommended (this solved the problem with the camera not working). It worked alright although there was some bubbling on the display if pressure was applied to the back of the unit when holding it. Everyting worked fine, until I tried to charge the unit. Then I discovered that the battery would not take a charge.

I then called Archos and arranged to send the unit into them. They sent me shipping instructions, but informed me that I had to pay for shipping, insurance, and packaging materials. They also told me that their product box was not suitable for shipping the tablet (which is odd, since that is what it was shipped to me in). Archos would not reemburse me for postage. This was surprising, since the tablet has a manufacturer's defect out of the box.

It appears you roll the dice when buying this tablet. It works as expected, but there are problems with quality control and customer service at Archos.

After Archos received the tablet, they reniged on their offer to replace it with a NEW unit, and were instructed to send it back to me so I could return it to the retailer for a full refund. They said they would send it back, but nothing was done and no tracking information was sent to me. I am still waiting for their response/action. Archos has been horrible in terms of replying to their email notification system, and the only way to reach them is to call the company on the one working phone number embedded in their website (most of the phone numbers are disconnected). What a sham. I also checked their RMA location's BBB rating. It is and "F". Archos has the worst customer service and customer relations team of any electronics company I have dealt with.

The Archos may not be the best tablet out there, but is definitely the most bang for the buck. And in our family we have a droid phone and 3 other android tablets: one 7" reader type tablet, one low end tablet, and one high end tablet, so I have plenty of comparison points.

* Fast 1GHz dual core CPU
* Android 3.2 (and not crippled)
* Enough built-in memory to get started
* Expandable with up to 32 GB SDHC
* Charges from USB (high power USB required) This is a HUGE deal if you travel a lot!
* Good size compromise between 10" and 7". It's in the Goldilocks zone.
* Archos Media Player App makes finding and playing media on home shared file systems ridiculously easy. I was really impressed with this.
* Full access to both Android Market and Amazon App Store
* Price!
* Built in kickstand is handy
* Wi-fi has been 100% reliable

* Ripple on the screen when the back is pressed. Not major IMO.
* Has locked up once, but since that's been only once in about a month of use, that's really not bad at all.
* Not as svelt as some more expensive tablets.
* Display really looks good and we were not at all disappointed in it, but still not on par with some higher end tablets

Bottom Line: Why pay about the same or slightly less for a crippled "book reader" tablet when you can get great hardware, a great OS, and a fully capable Android system instead? Or, you can pay twice the price to get a thinner unit with Gorilla glass and a slightly better display. This is a remarkable value.
