Archos Docking Adapter Kit for 404, 504, and 604 Series Players

We just bought a 504 and decided to splurge on the accessories. In hind site the only things we needed were the original unit, which comes with a perfectly acceptable USB charger, and the DOC since we wanted to hook it up to our HDTV and the DOC has both a remote and component/5.1 out. Turns out we could have scrimped a bit more and just stuck with the original charger, but we also got the docking adapter which really only adds another power supply to lug around (you can easily charge the 504 from any computer). Same goes for the CODECS, but that is another story.

It works but sits on the shelf as an orphan now, when we travel we only take the original USB cable, the AV output cable, and the travel case

This is handy to have at home as it allows me to keep the USB charger/docking cable that came with the archos 604 in my laptop bag for charging while I travel. I bought this kit mainly because they state that the charging time is significantly decreased. Sadly, I haven't seen much of a difference. It still takes 3+ hours to charge a fully depleted battery. There also isn't a stand, so you still end up laying the charge and unit on its side. So, overall it works and I would buy it again, but don't expect it to be a quickcharger or anything. You'll only see a small difference in overall charge time. If you travel frequently though, it's nice not to have to worry about forgetting the USB cable at home and leaving it in your laptop bag.

There are three great reasons to buy this for the 504

1. the price is much lower then the other 2 versions.
2. you need a charger for the 504 and the usb charging is slow and inconvenion.
3. I want to use the standard usb cables and not worry about where i put that special Archos usb cable.

I would have given it 5 star if the adapter can act as a stand also. Also it looks like you have to be careful with the connector, it may break.

This little piece of plastic works like they say it should, although, I think it should be standard equipment when you purchase your archos player. But it is not so I had to purchase this on line. You can connect practically anything with a USB 2.0 plug. The only thing that I have that it did not work with was my portable hard drive, though it did power it up. I downloaded pictures straight from my digital camera to my archos 504. I also used a card reader and transfered files that way as well.

You need this docking kit if you want to use your 504 as a external harddrive, becuase it has the usb plugin, so you can save photos/files/music/pdf from your camera, jump drive, card reader, or computer. Why the 504 don't have usb or firewire on it? That's because they want to make 504 as slim as possbile. You just need to plug it into your 504 when you need it, I think this is a good feature. Besides, you need this adapter to quick charge your 504. Way faster than using the usb to charge the battery.

This is a very useful kit. I bought it because I wanted charge my 504 on a regular wall socket. It's also nice to have a back up USB connection in case you lose the cable that came with the 504.

The only reason I didn't give this product 5 stars is that when I see the work "dock," I think of a stand. This adapter kit is not a stand. It would be nice to have a solid stand to dock the 504 on my desk.

I've used the kit and it works well, especially for outlets overseas with 220/240 volt systems. One complaint is that Archos requires one to purchase so many extras when the basic one like an AC charger should be included with the original 504/604 together with the USB port charger. My second problem is that the AC adapter still takes a long time to charge the ARCHOS battery - almost as long as the USB port. That said, I'm glad I bought it or I could have not charged my ARCHOS easily.

This charger works 150% better than the USB charger. Leave your ARCHOS for 2 hours tops and its fully charged!

This little adaptor does everything it's supposed to do. Archos could have put these functions in the 604, but I guess they didn't because it would have made the 604 bulkier/more expensive. Or, maybe because they could sell a separate product and make another $30.

Since Archos elected to force us to buy add-ons to get connections that the AV500 already came with, this unit is a must if you're traveling and need photo storage for your camera. You do not need to have power connected to use the mini-USB jacks that this unit provides. The unit is a cheap plastic plugin, but that's all there is folks! I use it with an archos 604-wifi and a Nikon d80- cheap enough and it works fine.
