Note: When I first purchased this accessory, it did not work until later when I updated my firmware. Only then did it become functional.

In one sense, this is a slick and versatile little accessory for your Archos IMT. It does allow you limited control over your MP3's and also the ability to listen to the radio as well as record voice memos. This is an imaginitive and inexpensive add-on to add to your collection.
However, now I can't remember why I bought this: I rarely listen to the radio, and if I wanted to do that I could buy one for ten bucks or so instead of using the biggest and best media player available. If I wanted a voice recorder, there are far smaller such gadgets available. I guess it's just cool that the FM Remote can do these things, and isn't the primary reason you buy an IMT. It simply increases its versatility, which is already great.

Two things to keep in mind:
1) When the FM Remote is plugged in, the IMT's built-in speakers disengage, so you will have to use headphones or MP3 speakers. Fortunately, the FM remote also has a headphone jack at the top.

2) The FM Remote cable is only slightly longer than the length of an average adult arm, which means that anything you could use the remote to do, you could also just reach over and interface directly with the Archos anyways. Ergo, the Remote isn't really that remote.

All in all, it is ok.

Do you like to occasionally listen to the radio between mp3's? I was sure i would, so i bought the ARCHOS FM thingy. I'd probably tell you how crystal clear the radio is...if i could get reception. I have MADE my own radios that get better signal than this thing. I turned on my clock radio next to my bed to 106.9, and it comes in clear as a bell, wherin, the ARchos fm thing doesn't pick up the station AT ALL!!! WTF!? I didn't test it for a voice recorder, but honestly, i don't think you are buying it for that purpose.

Wanted the FM listen/record for my archos 5. First one i got would only play in one ear on my headphones and only could get both ears if you play around and half plug it in but the sound quality dropped.

Quickly Amazon sent me a replacement (great by the way) and the new one did the same thing. Anyone else have this problem? Everything else seemed to work on both.

I tried different headphones and still didn't work. I wish they added it internally and not a external.

I bought this remote control to use it as a remote for the mp3 and also to use the FM function of the Archos 5. However, after only using it for a few days, it became static and finally stopped working. Now it rather freezes the whole Archos if I hook it up. It was a waste of money. It has been a month or so now; therefore, I am wondering if it's worth sending it back. I just hate all the hassel. I shouldn't have bought it in the first place.

I wanted this since I owned the av500 but could never find it. I gave it 3 of 5 stars because the cord is as thick as the usb cable used to charge it, and just as flexible. The radio is clear.Well, in my area. FM only (no AM). and when it's plugged in it picks up the digital info of the station and only displays the first 7 characters and does not scroll the info. When the song changes it changes the 7 charters. it captures more characters when you're recording the music from the radio. also the presets stations erase when I turn off the radio or uplug it. I though there would be a save button but there are none. I blame Archos programing I am sure they're fixing this with a firmware update (cough hint cough do it already cough) it can be better. I believe that the radio is actually already built into the IMT 5 and this is just buttons and a mic. I use it as a remote. I can place it in my backpack and click thru my music or FM(only). but as for day to day use the cord should have been shorten or it should have been made flush to the device (my choice). would I buy it again? yes, but only as a remote for my music. I'm waiting for the ATSC TV!! current owner of the 605wifi 80gb & IMT 5 250gb.

The FM remote allows you to pack away your Archos 5 and still shuffle through your mp3's or try to find a radio station. No need to walk around with the Archos in your hand or stop to pull it out because you want to change/fast forward/ rewind/skip... I was able to record a concert with the voice recorder and it picked up everything! The FM tuning is iffy though. Sometimes it picks up the "in between" stations, sometimes it skips the major ones. One of the worst features is that I can not save the presets. I think it's a good value, especially if it were to be consistant. It's a great value compared to Apple's attachment! Needs some work to be 5 stars.

First of all, the reason why I bought this, is because my Archos 7 IMT's own headphone port started to become loose and it stops from working from time to time. So I bought this, hoping it would be a good second port but it works like for a week then after that there was big static noise and it stopped working. All of a sudden people around me was listening to what I was listening......

This product is faulty, I am starting to think the whole Archos unit is faulty. I also bought the batter dock, that is faulty too, but I will leave that in the battery dock review.

Another good enhacement for a extremely buggy device, I don't know why I still try to use it! But seems that I cannot give up on my recently acquired Archos 5!!

After reading all of the mixed reviews I decided to go ahead and try this out anyway. I'm glad that I did. It's great to be able to put all of your pictures, music, and movies in one place and still have lots of room to spare. I think it works great in this capacity. I bought the DVR and it makes it easy to shuffle videos, such as tv shows, so that they keep playing. This is a feature a lot of mp3 and pmp's do not have.

It was a little difficult to initially set up internet access through my protected wireless server, but once I did I get a good signal far from the router and can easily connect.

Great FM reception , I think Archos should add it to the Device box and increase the price accordingly
