Product Description

From the Artist

"This music transcribes an Iberian peninsula carried towards a dialogue with the potential of what might be. It is a poetic geography that entertains the dream of the impossible: human horizons that transcend borders, lyrical Mediterranean idioms that are open to the universe and the intelligence of being, of mutual communication. Song and music explore this possibility in order to open up another path: original expression."

Having her excellent album of bright, traditional Arabo-Andalusian music of Morocco, I wondered if Alaoui's modern introspection would work. It is produced by Manfred Eicher, who tends to issue the peculiar and recognizable sound of quiet avant-garde and free jazz, strong in Scandanavian combos. Alaoui's voice and music here works with the timbres of oud, flamenco guitar, mandolin, violin, and percussion. The melodies and phrases are Portuguese fado melancholic, Spanish romantically sweet, and Moorish nostalgic. Engineered to enhance an echoed chamber-studio to give depth and volume, the gentle acoustics of voice and strings are strongly meditative. Rhythm and percussion appears at track 6, where "Oh, night!" takes up the typical Arabic musical exclamation and emotion. Its words are 11th century, from the quill of Ibrahim ibn Khafaja. Two tracks have words by Santa Teresa de Ávila [1515-1582]. Flamenco guitarist José Luis Montón arranged some pieces as well, his riffs and that of oudist Sofiane Negra are musically symbolic. This album succeeds entirely, capturing the heart of old Iberia. We hear the ancient echoes from crumbling walls, and is it mist or tears that blur our eyes?

Her voice ranges from earthy to ethereal. The selection of songs transports the listener to the time of the Spanish Moors along with Portuguese fado and Spanish flamenco.

What a wonderful surprise, I had heard some of the music in NPR and thought I would enjoy the CD, I loved it.
The music is a mix of middle eastern sounds, with notes of Flamenco and some tango beats.I had not previously heard of Amina Aloui, her voice is beautiful, strong and sweet, a pleasure to listen to. I would certainly recommend the album to my friends.

This music is my relaxation and my pleasure. North African/Iberian/Andalusian reminders of my life in Spain. Not for everyone, but for me, a pleasant change of pace. Amina Alaoui has a beautiful voice. There is a translation to English with the disk.

I got this for my husband who heard it on the car radio and wanted it. We are crazy about Andalusian music with Moorish influences and this CD is great for conjuring up memories.

This would definitely be one of my desert island 100 albums. This is a cross between so many genres, with beautiful flamenco guitar accompanying Amina's stunning vocals.
