Editorial Reviews

From the Author

There are a lot of AP Calculus books on the market. In fact, if you laid them end to end starting at your bedroom door, it'd probably be hard to make your way to the bathroom with the lights off.

However, that did not stop me from writing yet another. It begs the question: "For the love of humanity, why?" The answer is easy. None of the books on the market offered what I needed as an AP Calculus teacher.

Some of those books are incredibly rigorous and way too difficult for the average student to understand. Furthermore, the answers they offer to their exercises are often as illuminating as "(C) -- hint: divide." Other books are very readable, but there is no variety in the problems, so they don't really reflect just how amazingly difficult some AP Test problems really are. Some of the books didn't even include any Free Response questions in their practice exams, and they make up half of the test! All of the books shared one common trait, though: they're not really very funny. If I have learned one thing as a public school teacher, it's that learning is much more entertaining with humor.

And then there was light.

This book contains everything you need to not only pass the AP test, but also everything you need to understand calculus, whether you are in high school or college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely THE Best Prep for the AP Calc Exam, April 28, 2001
I'm an AP Calc teacher who has searched for an extraordinary resource to help prepare my students for the exam. This is it!! My students have found Mr. Kelley's explanations to be clear, concise, and easy to follow. The Hands On Activities have been very successful with my students in explaining a concept in the simplest of terms. A huge bonus to both my students and me is that this book is also fun to read. Mr. Kelley has included his fabulous sense of humor in the text and the example problems. It is a treat! My students have enjoyed this book so much that they have even asked to read it aloud in class!! Mr. Kelley definitely knows his calculus and he also knows how to write to appeal to students! If you can only purchase one AP prep book, this must be THE ONE!!!!

Okay. So you are calculus student scared out of your wits because you are taking or will be taking a rigorous calculus AB or BC course, and you want to get yourself a prep book so that you'll do well.

I was in your situation a year ago. And I went online to get a prep book, but I didn't know which one to get. Do you find yourself in this situation?

Then BUY THIS BOOK! Why? Because this is the ONLY, the absolute ONLY, AP prep book that is written with a voice. You can either buy this book, written by a witty, experienced, high school teacher who teaches teen-agers just like YOU, or you can buy another Princeton Review written by snooty PhD who doesn't know how to communicate with young people and explain concepts to them. I read this book over the summer before my class, and it was clear enough for me to go through all 663 pages by myself since it was written with GREAT humor, insight, charm, WIT (and lots of it), so I felt like I had an actual teacher sitting next to me, teaching me. When I took a predictor test at the end of my summer study, I got a four. So before I even entered the class, I was in AP-credit range, thanks to this book.

Now, all I have to worry about is polishing up my skills. Yet even now, this book is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to me.

Why, you ask?

Have you ever tried reading a college calculus book? These things are useful as paperweights, and paperweights only. I refer to this book instead. And whenever I miss a lecture or don't understand something, this book is always at my side. And whenever, I encounter stupid problems, I do a Kelley-AP-Prep problem instead, and I get the same understanding, along with all the humor, without all the hassle.

If I hadn't bought this book, I don't think I'd be getting a solid A in my BC Calc class. It has been the easiest, most enjoyable math class I've ever taken. I love it.

Mr. Kelley, I wish to thank you for this book, as well as for your autograph! You've made my life a whole lot easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Aide For the AP Test, July 17, 2002

This review is from: Arco Master the Ap Calculus Ab & Bc Test 2002 : Teacher-Tested Strategies and Techniques for Scoring High (Master the Ap Calculus Ab & Bc Test, 2002) (Paperback)
This book was probably the best out of all of the AP test books and was probably a major factor in why I got a 5 on the AP test, although I have made 5's on all of my tests so far (Government, U.S. History, Calculus, English, Biology, Chemistry) this test was probably the easiest thanks to this excellent book. I spent about a week working on this book before the AP test and learned twice as much as I had during the school year (i didn't go to most of my classes :)) and the book put it in a manner that it was totally understandable, concise and MEMORABLE. I didn't forget anything on the test day and I still remember it all. Thanks Mr. Kelley.
