When I was able to find a pair at a very nice discount I decided to buy them.

Finger tips can get a little cool when just standing around, Alpha SV mitten would be better if you wanted something warmer with a dexterity trade off.

These are hands down the best winter/high/altitude gloves that I have ever owned.

These are hands down the best winter/high/altitude gloves that I have ever owned. The Nepalese Sherpa that lead climb to the summit of Everest every year and set the 5000+ feet of fixed-rope lines used for commercial expeditions, they use this glove. It is extremely warm, and yet dextrous and streamlined. The gauntlet-style bungee cord adjustment at the cuff is very easy to use both gloved and ungloved. The glove is in fact 2 gloves, one being the outer shell (fully seam taped and waterproof), and the other being the fleece liner glove. Not only is this useful in terms of versatility (2fer), but its also important when you are active in a cold environment for an extended period of time, because your hands will sweat considerably over time and that moisture will be wicked away into the fleece. While you are moving and remaining active this is not a problem, but if/when you take a break or bivvy down for the night, that moisture will begin to freeze unless it is allowed to evaporate away. Luckily for anybody that owns the Alpha SV Glove from Arc'teryx, all you need to do to solve this perilous cold-weather problem is to release 2 small Velcro tabs, and simply pull the shell of the glove off your still fleece clad hands.

For my purposes (winter survival training, alpine mountaineering, crosscountry backpacking, snowboarding), these may be a bit of an overkill, but the quality of the craftsmanship is so high that they will last me years. And when the elements eventually do wear them down in some way, I can always send them in to Arc'teryx and for a nominal fee have them repaired or replaced (sometimes they even do it for free ;o). So what I am saying is that if you get these gloves, you will never need to get another pair of winter gloves again. Ever.

Buy them and never look back!

The Alpha SV glove, in simple terms, is the best all mountain glove in the world. Manufactured to standards that are without equal and attention to detail is exceptional, so you can't go wrong. I wear them skiing, mountaineering and on the motorcycle (not recommended, but entirely doable).

The lining is an issue that comes up in other reviews-that is, they are not warm enough. The glove will comfortably accommodate Merino wool liners making them much warmer, so no biggy. Obviously, I'll refrain from detailing the benefits and engineering of the gloves, there's plenty of info available on the web about all positive stuff.

My negatives:

-The gloves are manufactured in China, but are priced considerably more than gloves that are nearly as good,
-IMO the gauntlet strap should be nylon webbing, the elastic strap never cinches as well as nylon and that's it...

In conclusion the gloves are fantastic and hard to fault.

But, would I buy the Arc'teryx at full retail price? No-because, there are great alternatives around for general purpose cold weather gloves all are lined with Gortex and perform similarly...

Expensive yes. Hope I get 4-5 seasons out of them.. Build quality is good so Im expecting itll be fine. Ive never had a glove that fit as good as this out of the box. It doesnt appear that ill have to wait for the gloves to "pack in" in the right places so I have some dexterity either. Looking fwd to skiing on them this fall. Plus, they just look badass. :)

I have purchased 3 different types of gloves this winter, including heated ski gloves (don't waste your money), and these are the best ski gloves in the world.

Not that it's surprising, but Arc'teryx craftsmanship is second to none. That's clearly reflected in this glove. I got a GREAT deal on them, and haven't been able to find any other like this for the price I ended up paying. As with all Arc'teryx gear, their pieces are an investment. I have a few other pieces of theirs and plan on using them well into the future. If you're able to, pony up for these, you won't regret it.

Incredible! No water penetration at all - my hands were dry under a faucet. They are also very warm (liners can be changed if it's too warm or too cold). I've worn them in below 0 F and my hands have been warm enough. Hand portion has a leather feel that is nearly indestructible. Despite repeated rubbing against my snowboard blade, they look as if they are brand new but for superficial scratches. They have a belt to tighten to your wrist. They have a cinch cord to tighten the gauntlet around the sleeve and prevent penetration from snow or water. They have a drawstring to attach to your wrist. The fingers are technically sewn - Arc'Teryx made the stitches to the side, not at the tip, increasing sensitivity (rivals liners) - in layman's terms, you won't feel the seam on the inside of the liners at your fingertips like you do on most gloves or in socks with your toes.

Perfect, expensive and worth every penny. They really are the best gloves you can buy. If you can afford them - you're making the right decision.

For a couple months I have owned a pair of the Arcteryx Beta AR gloves. I was really impressed by their warmth and pretty good dexterity after a few weeks of breaking-in. But I then tried a pair of Alpha SV gloves in a store and understood why they were priced a decent bit higher. The Alpha SV gloves were very comfortable and offered a dexterity that seemed to surpass the Beta AR gloves even though they were new. When I was able to find a pair at a very nice discount I decided to buy them. They arrived yesterday just in time for the snowstorm and arctic freeze that hit eastern PA so I really got to field test them.

The gloves felt "broken-in" right out of the package. Compared to my Beta AR gloves they were much more comfortable. I also found them to be much more dexterous. One thing to note is that these gloves run larger when compared to other gloves. I usually wear a Large. But in the store I found that the Medium fit me much better. With the Large size Alpha SV gloves I found that the fit and dexterity were much worse than my Beta AR gloves in Large.

I found I could do things right away with the Alpha SV gloves that took me weeks to master with the Beta AR gloves. I was able to tie knots in trash bags and my dog's poop bags. I could also easily manipulate my snow blower controls. And I was able to zip and unzip easily my winter coat. I was also able to attach and detach my dog's leash and also enter the code in my garage door's entry pad. The entry pad has a keyboard the size of a telephone keypad so that this will give you a decent idea of the dexterity I had. I feel that these gloves should serve me well for any tasks I have to do on my winter hikes.

Dexterity aside, the gloves were very warm and dry.
