serious gear- expensive but worth it, December 25, 2009
I used to think that Arcteryx was "unjustifiably overpriced". Then I began to test gear as a hobby- mainly as an offshoot of my hobby, earth science, with a specialization in catastrophic geology. Now I have pro deals with most of the major manufacturers, so I'm exposed to a LOT of gear....I soon realized that Arcteryx is SERIOUS gear- the kind you can trust your life to in a serious (survival) situation, or miles from nowhere when things go inexplicably wrong and you have to depend on your gear to save your life. I have several pieces of Arcteryx-including this one; it is the warmest parka I own and incredibly well made:superb fit and finish,no-compromise materials, and incredibly well thought out. Although not waterproof, the hydrophobic insulation and DWR provide rock-solid protection. I've been outside (on the slopes of a volcano in Ecuador) in a blinding snowstorm that turned to sleet and freezing rain... and been warm and dry.YES,IT IS EXPENSIVE....oh, to be sure, if you have lots of disposable income, you can buy it just to "wear around", or to be seen sporting the cute little Archaeopteryx logo LOL.. It's all good. But the bottom line is that this parka is a serious piece of gear you can stake your life on. If you're a serious backcountry traveler (or a soldier, SAR worker, scientist on a research expedition) who needs to depend on their gear when the chips are down, the Dually Parka is worth what you pay for it.
