Very cool, but not perfect, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Arc'teryx Silo 30 Backpack - 1648-1831cu in (Misc.)
First of all, I'm a bit overboard about Arcteryx. I own far too much gear. I bought this bag to supplement a smaller day pack i have that i found to be too small for my basic carrying needs, as well as to get an arcteryx backpack. In general, I'm happy with this pack. It has several good external straps for carrying major gear (e.g., skiis, ice picks, etc.). The inside is nice - it has one basic inner zippable pouch for small stuff, an outer larger pouch for holding wet stuff (e.g., a shovel), and an inner pouch for holding a water bladder. The external part of the back is nice too with thermoformed padding that contours to my back.
My only complaints:
1. The backstraps are ultra thin; I fatigue when i carry this pack with any weight; other packs have nicely padded straps that fit nicely over my shoulders; not so much here.
2. the actual storage capacity of the bag is limited. can only carry so much.
others:
1. the bag looks ultra cool.
2. nice amount of extra storage spaces and individual compartments.
3. i originally purchased the silo 50. this bag did not work at all for me. first, it was huge, could carry my house in it. second, the rear handle rode along my head and was very annoying. most however, i absolutely hated the roll feature. rather than having a simple zipper system, it has this roll-up approach for closing the top part. very annoying, and didn't work well at all. further, it was based on a flexible piece of metal that held the whole thing together; i'm sure this piece would wear out over time and make it unclosable. Very annoying.
