Book Description

September 1, 1996

Lured form a career in medicine by the magic of the North nearly 20 years ago, Dr. Wayne Lynch returns every year to the arctic--the temptress that altered the course of his life. A world-acclaimed author and wildlife photographer, Lynch has compiled a book unlike any other on this distant region.

In A is for Arctic, he presents an intimate and entertaining look at the charismatic creatures that flourish in this wild polar world. Experience the sights and sounds of seabird cliffs teeming with screaming kittiwakes and colorful auks, and marvel at the majesty of such northern mammals as the polar bear, fox, walrus, seal and whale. They have all adapted to a landscape still touched by the timeless flow of glaciers. Wonderfully illustrated with photographs that capture the delicate and complex nature of this region, A is for Arctic will change forever the way you view the North.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA. Whether for research projects or for casual and entertaining perusal, this book packs a punch. The author's stated goal is to provide in each alphabetized entry just one or two fascinating aspects of the creature or phenomenon at hand. In doing so, he whets readers' appetites for more information. That is the book's particular appeal. Lynch has included such diverse subjects as the aurora borealis, blizzards, ducks, lemmings, mosquitoes, oil, owls, spiders, wolves, and xanthoria. Tidbits of trivia contained in cutlines or as marginalia make every page a little gold mine. The glossy photographs, many full-page, are unsurpassed for clarity and composition among nature publications. There is a generous list of books and publications for further reading, and both the common and the scientific names of the creatures appear in the index.?Cynthia J. Rieben, W. T. 3.0 out of 5 stars Spectacled Eider + Cold weather animals = A decent book, December 12, 2001

This review is from: A is for Arctic: Natural Wonders of a Polar World (Paperback)
It's a fascinating book, with beautiful pictures and good information on certain subjects. For the prices available on this site it is well worth the buy though. I bought it many for the picture of the Spectacled Eider. I'm a waterfowl artist and well, thought that was a good enough picture for some great reference on it. I'm a big fan of the arctic also. so if you love snow and cold animals, put it on your charge card and wait for it's arrival. I think you'll like it.
Bottom line, It's not just a look at once book!
Buy a used one at least!
