I am personally disappointed..., January 13, 2004
This review is from: Arctic Reflections [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I guess it all depends on the tastes and interests. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE and LOVE the Arctic. I waited a long time to get my hands on this video, however, I am truly disappointed with this production...not to mention that it was produced here at home (Vancouver), where I could have gotten it cheaper and quicker too!
This film shows mostly ice bits and pieces by the shores, and as well as icebergs. There are some scenes showing the Inuits, animals, mountain scenery and so on. However, there were also repeated scenes, and worse of all...the music accompanying it. I would have rather watched this film without any music, and just hear the waves crashing onto the shores or the TRUE silence of this remote corner of the world. THAT, I will call it more relaxing, as if I am actually sitting there absorbing the atmosphere...without such music destroying the mood (again, this is only according to my own tastes).
Anyhow, I am disappointed not only with the music being played, but also visually. Icebergs and ice-packs are beautiful, but watching the same group of ice floating here and there gets boring and too repetitive. I was expecting much more different mountain scenery, both coastal and inland views, and as well as perhaps some visuals on the communities throughout the Arctic. From what I've gathered (through the Credits at the end), pretty much all scenes were shot in northern Canada (which is great). But, it would have been a much greater film with shots from various places like Greenland, Norway, Russia, Alaska, and other archipelago islands as well... Since there were only a handful locations being shot, it only lead to the some repetitive scenes... as if more than half of the video was shot from one standing location, but at different angles, or at different pieces of ice along the same shoreline, etc.
Overall, very disappointed at this half-hour film according to my own expectations. But some scenes ARE breathtaking, don't get me wrong. I don't know why I give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Maybe at least somebody finally dedicates a film production to this wonderful part of the world. I guess its not a terrible production...maybe its just not my type, or maybe I just expected too much out of it before hand.
