Editorial Reviews

New World Finn, October 2001

“in these songs, you can hear the silence speak.” ...certainly, she has produced a shining example of Finnish roots music.”

Product Description

“Arctic Silence” is a selection of ancient Finnish songs. In these haunting, relaxing melodies you can hear silence speak.

Many of the songs are accompanied by 5-and 10-string KANTELE (Finnish lap harp). Finnish folk poetry tells that when the Kantele was played for the first time, the sound was so beautiful that everybody started to cry. When the tears touched the water of the ocean, they turned to pearls.

Let the sound of kantele bring some magic into your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars The music that inspired Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, January 2, 2003

I first heard the music on the National Geographic special on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

It is absolutely beautiful. The music is performed only with Merja's heavenly "elvish" voice acompanied only with the Finish lute.

If you ever wanted to hear Galadriel or Arwen singing, this is the soundtrack to get!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music!, September 16, 2003

I also discovered Merja's music on the National Geographic special. It inspired me to pursue learning the kantele and exploring Finnish mythology and music in depth, as part of my participation in the Society for Creative Anachronism. When are you coming to perform on the East coast again, Merja?!?!?!
