5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, June 22, 2000
This review is from: The Arctic World (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful picture book of the diversity of the Arctic. Photos range from the standard icebergs and igloos to scenes which are common in the arctic but uncommon in books - fields of arctic flowers and inuuits as they really live, not just the tourist version. There is a fair amount of text with some good information but the photos are its strong point. I got this book before a trip to the arctic and when I returned I appreciated it even more. I even sent a copy to a friend who was with me on the trip and he loved it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating collection for the Arctic fanatic, September 26, 2003

All I can say is that, this is a beautiful picture volume that I am proud of owning for my Arctic book collection. Not only you will find lots of information regarding this polar region, you will also find numerous colour photos from the Canadian Archipelago islands, Greenland, some of Iceland, Norway, Svalbard (Norway), and Russia to name a few. There are also pictures from Lapland Scandinavia and Russia. This book not only reveals the beauty of the barren landscapes and ice, it also shows both human and animal life that survive such harsh climates.

The Arctic region is not just full of ice and icebergs...you will be amazed of how many places lying north of the Arctic Circle are actually green and forested. For example, in northern Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, & Finland), and northeastern Russia, you will find a much more livable environment comparing to the other places on the same latitude...due to the warmer gulf streams. Perhaps this is a reason why its quite relatively populated in this region. For example, Murmansk in Russia, is the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle. There, the city inhabits just a bit under half a million people.

Overall, this book is beautiful. The pictures may tempt you into visiting these such remote regions. However, I did notice a few noticable spelling errors when it comes to names of towns, etc. Otherwise, a MUST-HAVE!

Another book I would like to recommend is "Poles Apart: Parallel Visions of the Arctic & Antarctic"

Recommended!!
