... and if you have at least 'Traveler's Competence' in the language, and a full-sized dictionary, you'd be doing yourself a great favor by trying to read "Ardiente Paciencia" in the original. This is the novella upon which the film "Il Postino" was loosely based. There's an English translation, 'The Postman', available, but it's only slightly more faithful to the original than the movie. Skarmeta's love story is as appealingly modest and humane as the film, but his indictment of the CIA-backed murderocracy of Pinochet is far more chilling. What's especially missing from the film is the examination of Chilean literature, and of the role of literature in Chile -- implicitly therefore in the World -- that purls through the encounters of the mailman with the great poet. Very few books are as successfully double-edged as Ardiente Paciencia, at once heart-warming and blood-chilling.

While the book purports to be fiction, it describes the relationship between a postman and the poet, Pablo Neruda. Basically, it's a delightful piece of work, with a quirky relationship between the characters. The best part about it was the developing relationship between the postman and the poet. It also dealt with the political realities of that time period. What I didn't like about this particular edition was that I was unawaare that it was meant for a German audience. The notes and the end flaps were all in German. I would have preferred either English or Spanish.
