Product Description

The Arduino Mega 2560 is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560. It has 54 digital input/output pins (of which 14 can be used as PWM outputs), 16 analog inputs, 4 UARTs (hardware serial ports), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. The Mega 2560 R3 is compatible with most shields designed for the Arduino Duemilanove or Diecimila. This is the new R3 board, with extended headers with additional signals (IOREF, SCL, SDA)

This is a Chinese knock-off, not the original Arduino. First of, you can tell from the picture, the back of the board is white on blue, which is the original 2560 not the R3. In the back it says Designed in Italy vs Made in Italy. On the front, under Arduino Mega, the genuine Arduino will have the website address, this one doesn't. You can compare the pictures yourself: [....]

I know it's an open hardware but that doesn't mean you can sell knock-offs under the original name, especially R1 as R3..
This one will go back, and I will buy another one from an authorized distributor that listed on Arduino.cc. That's the least I can do to support them anyway.

This item is a counterfeit. Save your self the trouble and the money. I realize that this controller is open source and anyone can make the board but the Arduino name is trademarked. I don't mind spending a little extra to support the company but if I wanted a clone I could have gotten one for $16 cheaper and since purchasing this seller raised the price $14 more so that makes it more than double the price of a clone. I am very disappointed that Canakit misrepresented the item by using pictures of the genuine item in the listing but this item looks different and has different components and layout then the genuine yet is stamped with the Arduino trademark logo and website. I am sure it will work just fine but I don't support blatant attempts to rip of the genuine producer nor the customer. If they wanted to sell a knockoff/clone under the open source guidelines they certainly could have done so without resorting to counterfeiting.

First, I didn't realize this is a chinese knock-off when I purchased it. A little digging seems to indicate the real board would say "Made in Italy", and indeed this one says "Designed in Italy".

Functionally, it probably doesn't matter, but considering these don't break the bank I'd be happier had I bought the real McCoy and helped the project out a little.

On to the real problem at hand.

The bootloader on this board has a terrible bug in it and it applied to the the real Mega256 as well as this knock off.

If you plan to code a large project on this board, chances are very good this bug will get you.

If your compiled program contains "!!!" anywhere within the object code, the bootloader will go into monitor mode and just hangs when it is loading object code from the PC. The program simply will not upload.

You may think you can get around this by simply not imbedding any strings with "!!!" which works fine for smaller programs, but the somewhat large (50K) program I'm developing has produced this string inside of the object code on multiple occasions making me stop, figure out where in the code this might be occurring and then figuring out how to rewrite the code so it doesn't generate the same object code. It has been a royal pain. Finally, it started generating "!!!" code inside of an array initialization that I simply cannot rewrite, rendering the board useless. I have had to return to my original MEGA to finish development of the project.

The bug has been recently fixed, but loading a new bootloader is not exactly simple and requires additional hardware. If you need this board, there is no way I know to determine if you will get a patched bootloader, so if you really need this board, plan to have a way to fix the bootloader.

The product that was purchased was not an origional Arduino MEGA 2560 Board R3. Checked with the Arduino site and thier picture of the board did not match. The board was returned and I puchased another through a vendor listed on the Arduino site.

As far as I can tell, this is the real thing. What I recieved matches the photos at arduino cc (which is different then the photo in this listing).

I bought this item from NKC Electronics, knowing that their prices were higher than some. I did so to ensure that I was ordering a genuine Arduino produced in Italy, not a cheap Chinese knock-off. I know it's open source hardware and that other producers are entitled to build units to the same design spec, but I wanted to buy a product that I know uses high-quality components and am willing to pay a bit more to support the project.

I have own and Arduino Uno that I purchased from Adafruit and this unit came in identical packaging and is labelled with the expected "Made is Italy". I am confident in saying that this is the real thing.

I bought from NKC Electronics who is a authorized Arduino dealer and received an authentic Arduino Mega 2560 R3. I would suggest only buying from authentic dealers if you don't want a counterfeit. The description and first two photos depict the Arduino Mega 2560 R3 although the third picture is for an Arduino Mega ADK.

I bought one of these used for a good price. It looks and works brand new. The only bad thing was packaging: they shipped this in a bag with no foam padding. 3 stars.
