I had seen articles about the Arduino online and in some magazines, so put it on my Christmas list. My wife said she didn't know what I needed, so I should make up an order. I searched for Arduino-compatible items and ended up buying some $165 of stuff to play with, including a book, and then went back and got some more stuff and a second book. (Don't tell my wife--I told her $100 would do it.) I started through the tutorial in the book and became more interested and impressed with the capabilities. I told my 12 year-old grandson about it and he came to visit and learn. He told my daughter he would like to buy some Arduino items with money he had earned and she agreed he could. I had also promised I would share some of my items with him.

Well, he did a better job of searching the Amazon items and found this kit. My daughter called and asked me to look at it online. My first reaction, before seeing the description, was that it might be more money than they would want to invest if they weren't sure. However, upon reading the details, I began to get really annoyed. There are considerably more capabilities in this kit than in all the stuff I bought--and the kit includes a book of tutorials describing it what you're doing very nicely.

I went to my daughter's home to see his kit and looked at the book and became more frustrated. The list of items it has that I didn't is depressing. After I had told my wife about it, she told me (!) to go ahead order the kit and enjoy it. So I did and now have two Arduinos.

BTW, go to the sporting goods department of a discount store and get a clear plastic fishing tackle box, as used to hold lures and small items. Otherwise, the parts get mixed together and finding what you need is a real chore.

I paid 106$ for this delivered and was pleased with it. The board is one of the smaller boards which cost around 20$ on it's own, you can get the Mega 2560 for the same price. The LCD is around a 15$ part. With the remaining parts costing around 20-30$. The book is nice but not worth more than most of the books out there that are simular.

All together around an 80-100$ value.

Overall this is a nice starter kit but try not pay more than 100$ for it.

First let me say that the packaging was very nice. It really looks spiffy.

The book was nice and informative, however the binding failed after a few days. The outer cover fell off leaving a bunch of sticky glue. In the future, a ringed binding would have been nice so you could lay it flat as you work.

My issue is that some of the parts don't match exactly what the book shows. An example is the piezo. The breadboard has 5 pins across on either side. The piezo in the book is 3 pins wide. This provides them enough room to hook up a couple other connections on the same line on the breadboard. The piezo that came in my kit was 5 pins wide. This means I was unable to get it to fit on one line like the book showed, and I had to have it span across to the other side - forcing me to change a bunch of the connections. Sure, this is fairly trivial, but this is a beginners kit. As I am working through the guide I should not be expected to MacGyver up solutions due to parts not matching.

Another issue was that the wires coming out of one of the motors were in a different order than what the book showed. Again, not a huge issue, but easily overlooked by the novice trying to complete a project. You'd expect the wires on the connection to be in the same order.

Overall I am happy with the purchase, however you need to be aware that the parts provided may not match the guides.

I got this set because it has been a while since I had worked on a ground up micro-controller. I am a software engineer and work on embedded software everyday, so I pretty much know what I am doing.
The kit include a nice collection of parts and a pretty nice looking book.
I think the price of the kit is mostly the book. If you want to learn about the arduino micro-controller I probably wouldn't recommend this book. If you want to learn about circuits and basic coding to get a fun result, this book is great. Note that the age range on the kit is 10 and up, and I totally agree.
For myself I will probably run through some of the chapters in the book to have some fun and show my wife and daughter, then I will dig into the base code (API) and figure out how it really works. Then I'll save the kit to teach my kids with later on.

A couple details about the kit/book that I found might have been helpful:
- The book's first 30 pages cover really basic circuits design including the first project which on;y uses the arduino board as a power supply for an LED
- All the code design is basically just function calls to set output and such. All the coding is application level stuff, no knowledge of the driver level needed at all.
- It does cover some stuff I didn't learn in college, but would have liked too.
- If you are thinking about buying this and are about to through away one of those old AOL CDs, save one, it is needed for some of the projects as kind of a flywheel.
- At the end of the book it recommends several books for further reading, most of which are from O'Reilly Media. Take a look at those books as well, I know I am going to.

Enjoy
