5.0 out of 5 stars wow
This album helped me through a lot of tough times in my life. When this album came out I had just broken up with my girlfriend of 2 years because she was cheating...and as track 2 says, "2 years is a long time to pretend." The hatred on the first few tracks was really true for me at the time, and a few weeks after the album came out my grandpa passed away and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Another overrated EMO band.
What is up with all these rave reviews about this band? I am from Torono (near Moneen's hometown) and there seems to be alot of hype here over these guys. Personally, I don't understand any of it. One review mentions that "this was EMO music before it became watered-down bubble-gum pop". This is true indeed about 99% of all the so-called EMO bands. I would put...

This album helped me through a lot of tough times in my life. When this album came out I had just broken up with my girlfriend of 2 years because she was cheating...and as track 2 says, "2 years is a long time to pretend." The hatred on the first few tracks was really true for me at the time, and a few weeks after the album came out my grandpa passed away and as track 7 says, "I won't say goodbye and I refuse to watch you die, I won't forget." But yeah, if you're having a tough time this album is one of the best albums to listen to. It tackles just about every mood you can think of. It's fast and ferocious at times and soft and chill at other times. It goes through all the moods I was feeling when it came out, and it's just all together one of the best albums of 2003 in my opinion. All the musicians on the album are absolutely amazing and this band is extremely talented. Buy everything they have released. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The same old stuff mixed in with some of the best songs ever, January 23, 2004
This review is from: Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now (Audio CD)
Much to my dissapointment, and to my hesitation to report, much of this album will only be exciting if your first band in the neo-post-punk-emo-rock genres was Thursday and you heard of them on MTV2 or in Hot Topic. It's good, but nothing overly exciting about it . . . except . . . two songs that won't let me write this album off as another collection of schlock destroying my favorite genre of rock. Track 5, "Closing My Eyes Won't Help Me Leave," is a non-stop rush of pure, true, emo goodness that will make the last few songs wait. The lyrics bounce back and forth between two different voices, the drums never settle into a steady beat, the guitars have a beautiful syncopation to them that makes it one of the best songs I've heard in quite a while. However, it is SMASHED by the 9 minute epic album closer "The Last Song I Will Ever Want To Sing." This amazing feat of songwriting pulls you through every possible emotion. My personal favorite part of the song is when it climaxes with intense, emotional screaming, and all four instruments reach a peak crecendo, and then suddenly everything stops and a small, quiet, beautiful, single guitar playing a soft dual-note rhythm sends the song into its calm, closing minutes. Like you had waited your entire life for that kiss with that person, and it finally happened, and after it was over you feel that it was everything you could have wanted it to be and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars a really great cd, June 20, 2003
This review is from: Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now (Audio CD)
i would break it down song by song, but ill just sum it up in one sentence. This album is awesome, much better then their first. this cd was put together very well, and the songs are catchier. Their skills have obviously grown since the first album, i would recommend this album to any fans of static lullaby, taking back sunday, or the alkaline trio. at times they get hard with screaming and dual vocals, and at other times they are very soft. this is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, August 3, 2004

Great could be an understatement. I never heard of these guys until I saw them live with "Murder By Death" and "Panic In Detroit" in Chicago a few days ago. Moneen put up probably the best live show. They went from everything calm and tame, to the most intense feeling I felt that night. The last song they played ended with them going off the stage then back on throwing the guitars on the ground, knocking the mics over, and getting on the ground screaming into them. You can't also forget about all the jumping around at other times.

I then decided to buy this album and it is great. They said on their website that when people ask what kind of music they are, they tell people "Agressive, Melodic Pop." That fits them well. For the full experience though, see them live.

These fellow Bramptonians are geniuses!! This album is awesome. It takes you on a musical journey and rocks from start to finish. The songs are agressive, melodic, and long...just the way I like them. Rock on, Moneen, rock on!!!

This cd is amazing from start to finish. these guys can play. great guitar work. the lyrics are heartfelt. They have tonz of energy and can slow it down too. lil piano here and there. I saw them live. They opened for Taking back sunday and saves the day.... so they only played 5 songs. Blew me away. So much energy. Def a great live band. I give this cd 5 stars. And if anyone has anything bad to say about this cd they must listen to nickelback.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, October 27, 2003

I heard this band when a friend of mine and I were playing pool and he popped this album in. At first I just thought "well these guys are good," so I went out and bought the cd after I had downloaded a few songs. I fell in love with it. I am a person who says that emo doesn't exsist because it's just rock music. And it music. If you don't put music into a catagory or genre then you let yourself enjoy what you're hearing. Personally, in relating these guys to the Get Up Kids, they seem to be improving with each record while not changing a lot. The Get Up Kids were good on their first record but got better musically and vocally with their next album. I feel the same here. The songs are better and the vocals a bit more on key. But the vocals are still raw sounding here as the were on "The Theory of Harmonial Value".

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what music used to sound like, July 31, 2003

Yes, kids, this was what "emo" used to be. Before all the tennie-boppers came on and ruined the scene with their versions of watered-down bubble-gum pop. this is straight up rock. to describe moneen's sound, you would need to accept this far-fetched 'what if': what would it sound like if the members of braid (before they turned into hey mercedes), and the members of jimmy eat world (pre-clarity, 1997 jimmy eat world) and the get up kids (pre-something to write home about, 1998 guk) all got together and made the most amazing band of all time? they would sound like moneen.

if you were around the "emo" scene in 1998, check out moneen. it'll remind you why it's still sometimes worth dealing with 3000 kids screaming about brand new (ironic name, since it's the same old crap) to catch a truly great band. And for those of you that were in 7th grade (or younger! eeks!) in 1998 - god help you, go buy this cd and learn what music used to sound like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moneen rocks!, July 20, 2003
This review is from: Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now (Audio CD)
This CD is incredible, but their live performance is much better. I would definately suggest checking them out on tour, either with Brand New right now or with Reggie in August and September. They rock and they are great guys too. Rock on Moneen.
