For those familiar with the fun TV quiz show, this game is very similar. The DVD can be played on your TV or computer. Adults can play with kids (not necessarily 5th graders), kids can play with kids, and even adults can play with other adults, to see who is "smarter." The questions in math, science, English, social studies, etc., are taken directly from the 5th grade through 1st grade curriculums, some of them more challenging than you might expect. Of course, the reason that adults sometimes fare so poorly against ten-year-olds is because much of what kids are learning in school is never used and therefore forgotten.
I have a couple of small complaints. First, there are only 20 complete games, and each game takes about 15 minutes to play, which means that total play time is only about 5 hours. Perhaps I am spoiled by video games which can take hundreds of hours to complete! On the other hand, 20 games for $20 works out to a reasonable one dollar per game. Second, there are only 10 questions per player per game. The total number of questions, including the million dollar bonus questions, is 420. This time I am spoiled by other knowledge-based games with more than a thousand total questions, usually with the option to purchase more. Third, the questions for each game always repeat in the same order, so if a player gets halfway through and then drops out, he must answer the same questions again before getting the chance to answer the remainder of the questions for that game. I suppose this is not necessarily a fault, because it reinforces knowledge retention, but it can get a bit boring for players who drop out multiple times. All in all it's a good, fun, educational game. I just wish there was more of it!

We bought this game for $20 two weeks ago on Amazon. It is COMPLETELY overpriced at the current price. The kids enjoyed it (7,9&10yrs), it was educational for them, even challenging. For the adults, 75% of it was easy, 25% you had to think for a few seconds. We enjoyed watching the kids wrestle with the questions, quite a bit, but for the adults, that was the only fun we had. Don't buy it for more than $20, considering that there are only a limited amount of games and was not as challenging as the tv show. Think of it as a kids game, great for sleepovers and winter get playdates. Box says 8+, really not for over 12yrs.

I played this game with my family during a recent get together. While the appeal of this game is pretty great, the execution is TERRIBLE. It runs VERY slowly on the DVD player, and that would be merely annoying were it not for Foxworthy's constant "funny" comments about your question choice, your answer, etc. The video snippets preface and follow each question, as well as every stage of the game.
Imagine listening to Foxworthy ask you if you're smarter than a fifth grader. Then waiting for the DVD to load a question. Then answering the question. Then, watching Foxworthy give you the same "clever" trick answer to each of your questions. Next Foxworthy will tell you how far along the million dollar prize you are, and then the whole thing REPEATS for the person you're playing against. Finally, imagine shooting yourself (because you'll want to after one round). If they wanted to make this game good, they would have eliminated or greatly restricted the number of times Foxworthy makes an appearance. Of course, that wouldn't make it worth the $49.99 Amazon is currently asking. Don't buy it.

I purchased this DVD for my husband for Christmas because he loves the TV show. We have been playing it almost every night. It is just like the TV show.....fast, fun, with questions of just the right difficulty for each grade level. Actually the million dollar question has been the hardest....and has caused me to lose quite a few times. But that makes it more real. Of course, with all these games the host repeats a lot of his phrases but I love this game; great bang for the buck!

This game is entertaining and educational for the whole family. We played it on Christmas day with kids, parents, grandparents and great grand parents and had a great time. We had two 5th graders playing with us and found they knew most of the answers! It was also a good way to praise our children for being so smart. I hope there are more sequels coming, I will buy all of them.

I am an avid boardgame/interactive game player and even love the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" --- This game is just very poorly designed and will be returned after only playing once.
Most of the time is spent loading the DVD which is done before and after every question, category selection, answer judging, etc. It even loads to ask whether you said "I'm not smarter than a 5th grader" --- Otherwise you don't get your "winnings". There are 20 pre-programmed games you can load with same questions and categories. This game is absolutely lame and I am VERY disappointed.

My kids (10 y/o and 7 y/o) and I were so excited when we got this game for Christmas... I was very disappointed to find out we can only really play it twenty times... there are 20 games on the DVD, which always have the same questions in the same order... so, the 20 games will be fun, and it's educational, but once we've gone through those 20 games, it is unlikely any of us will want to play again...

This game has about 30 questions on it. It repeats the same questions everytime you play it, even if you are playing multiple games in a row. I was so excited about buying this game, but severely disappointed in the end. I would never purchase this game again unless it was completely reprogrammed with many more questions.
