Original Talent,
This review is from: Are We There Yet (Audio CD)
To tell you the truth, I don't normally listen to Christian music. I am a major rap fan, and I mostly listen to the mainstream rap that you may hear on the radio or watch on MTV, although I do have a few Christian cds. But whether it is mainstream or not, a cd that displays great talent such as John Reuben's freshman debut easily catches my attention. Some of my friends who are Christians and listen to music such as this lent this cd to me, guaranteeing that I would enjoy it. They were absolutely right. I love every track on Are We There Yet?. Most of the songs on this cd display a light, fresh hip-hop beat that would make them bangin in the clubs, and others, such as Do Not and Rest Easy give off a hard, aggresive tone which is sure to get you pumped up. It doesn't matter if you like hip-hop like me or not, you are bound to enjoy this cd. It has a bit of a pop tone to it and could be enjoyed by those who like rock music. And even if you have never listened to Christian music before, may it be because you have never felt obligated to listen to it or feel that it won't fit your tastes, I strongly advise you to give this cd a try. If you like Eminem, chances are you will like John Reuben.

John Reuben- Unusual but he rocks!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Are We There Yet (Audio CD)
Unfortunately, "Are we There Yet" is the only John Reuben CD I own, but it stinkin' rocks. Its really hard to decide on a favorite song...and when a CD does that to you...its a good sign. My three favorite are "Divine Inspiration", "Him, Her, He or She", and "Ego". They are so... I don't know... exciting and snappy they just rock. And you can totally tell then John Reuben is a Christian artist, because he never says anything rude or crass and, though some of his music might lean towards a hint of self praise, he still rocks... in short I guess I'm trying to say he is the best Christian rapper in the business... and he could kick Eminem's butt anyday.

Are we there Yet? by John Reuben is awsome! Its catchy and fresh and its not corny like some Christian rap has been in the past and me being a huge dc Talk fan love it just for having a guest appearance by Toby "Mac" Mckeehan

I had no idea who John Reuben was until I went to the Five Iron Frenzy, Relient K, and Ace Troubleshooter show in Kansas City, and there was also this guy named John Reuben. He was great! I bought the CD immediately after him and his crew performed. He has so much energy and style, and he really loves God. I would have to say this is the best christian hip-hop/rap CD I have ever heard. No matter what type of music you like, you will like this CD.

A man inspired!,

Inspired, yes indeedy, kiddies... Where rap and a clean message don't always mix, John Reuben thrives! He finds true roots in the sound and spirit of BOTH the full embrace of his beliefs AND the Hip-Hop/Rap scene that has been spiraling down into the Ego Abyss--which he hits full steam ahead in the track "Hello Ego." Opening with a beat-be-down sound that gets your hands up in "Devine Inspiration" and ending his freshman release with his final track "God is Love," you will not be dissappointed. Let's not forget "Do Not" which just demands air play, christian or not! Personally, I could go on and on to say how I soaked up the introspection and joyful noise that racks these tracks putting John Reuben ahead of the game. If you don't hear this CD in your own system, you'll hear it bumping out of mine! God bless to you all, and may your Divine Inspiration shine through!

Personally, I haven't tried many Christian rap cd's, but I'd have to agree that this cd is awesome. It is not only rap, but some alternative/rock styles as well. The lyrics are incredible and I'm thankful for a rapper who will dedicate his work to Jesus. I haven't stopped listening to it...it's a definite necessity for any Christian music collection.

Good Stuff 4.5 Stars!,

As i opened the clear sheet of plastic i see yet another good quality cd made by our good old friend John Reuban. I chucked it in the CD Player and gave it a bang. I was impressed, starting off with a sweet song to settle the soul. Then the next two songs i had already listened to from downloading them legally off mp3.com/sphereofhiphop... go check it out. Some of his songs a quite funny and innovative, one example of that is fighting his Ego. The second last song is a freestyle effort by him and is also quite amusing. Overall its a good album, with many tracks hitting me first listen. If you like his second album and always wondered about his first album, then you should certainly give it a try.Take it easy

Christian or not, this Cd is just good entertainment. The best song on here is of course Do Not with bumpin bass and all ... but seriously, every single song is a gem. If you're wondering if you should get this cd, I'd tell you that you were insane if you didnt.

A Gem,
This review is from: Are We There Yet (Audio CD)
Where others follow in another artist's footsteps, John Reuben is an exception. With his own unusual and original style, he puts personality into what he says instead of simply talking to monotonous drum loops like most "alternative/hip-hop" artists today. While I usually dislike rap - I think of it as most of the time as too repetitive - Reuben delivers. An almost rockish tone covers many of his songs, and he has a way with words, both talkin' 'em and writin' 'em. His lyrics are intelligent and meaningful, and none can deny he addresses the most prominent issues in society today boldly and with strong resolve. Also contrary to most "rap", his songs are creative and catchy and can convey to almost any type of person, from an adult "sitting in a coffee shop" to a teenager struggling with themselves and their faith. In his early 20's, Reuben already has much maturity and insight, which serves to make him that much more amazing of an artist. Not to be missed - "X-Ray", "Him Her He She", "Do Not", "Hello Ego", and "God Is Love". |
