I used to think they sucked,
By A Customer
This review is from: Are These Our Lives (Audio CD)
I saw Trial live before I heard their records. Everyone at their shows cannot debate that these guys really rip up a crowd. Upon hearing through the darkest days I was into them for about a week until I realized the lyrics were really vague and boring. "Strip the mask of truth from the lies!?" They became the heel of many of my peers jokes. Then I heard Are These Our Lives? and promptly began struggling to ram my foot half way down my choking asophagas (sp) Where was I the last year and a half when this was just sitting there waiting to be listened to? Are These Our Lives? completely revives my faith in these guys and I wish they were still together to put another one out. A pearl in the Northwest hardcore scene.

Okay, first off I have heard older Trial. I have older Trial albums. Trial never sucked. They have gotten better, as every band does with time and experience, but they never sucked. With that said, this is the best hardcore album out there. I listen to all types of music, with hardcore being my favorite. I love the style for its passion and willingness to put out a message. This album is mindblowing. I picked this up like 4 years ago and it is still my #1 hardcore favorite. There is so much put into the lyrics and messages in this album...to say it has been overlooked is a huge understatement. Hardcore bands come and go, which is sad, but when they leave behind albums like this it makes it all good. Try not to be an activist or at least interested in the topics on here, you can't do it. It drives you to want to make the world a better place. Yes, that is corny. Yes, I am done now. Buy it.

Intense Intellectual Old/New School Hardcore,

Trial steps up again, taking two years to write their new album. This album is very well thought out lyrically, and the music written is absolutely amazing.Greg takes his stand on many politcal issues which seem to be ignored in our society. All the songs are great and the stand outs are War by other means, One Step Away,Legacy, and Are these our Lives. Buy this to feel what it really means to stand up for what you believe in. Absolutely amazing!!!

I've listened to this band off and on since the 90s and even now when I come back I'm very impressed with their material. If you enjoy thinking person's hardcore, you'll enjoy this (think mid-years Bad Religion). Also if you like Rage Against the Machine or System of a Down you are liable to be pleasantly surprised by this off-beat CD. I've never seen them in person, but the CD is much more "user friendly" than the live performances you can find on YouTube. Though I'd love to see them live too. Look to be high energy.
The only down side is that the world continues to be so f'd up and our little efforts so masterbatory. But better angry and liberated than pacified and enslaved.

It's a shame that these guys have been broken up for awhile. This CD in comparison to the older Trial CD's, well there is little to be compared because this CD shows so much maturity that it's like Trial reinvented themselves in a new dimension.
I read somewhere that Greg took vocal lessons just for this CD and it does show. You can understand him very clearly in the album and he never gets annoying. The lyrics are genius, being both intelligent and creative and touch basis on the problems in society that few of us realize to see. Powerful quotes and samples are used throughout as well. Each song has its own meaning. If you search for the lyrics on the internet, there is a website where Greg explains each song in pretty good detail. Each song is unique in its own way and the CD is amazingly structured from beginning to end. The music is just incredible. The CD starts out with violin work that builds up tension and provides for the perfect intro into the first song which hits you fast and hard. This is hardcore at its best and sometimes has a metallic sound. This is a must buy for anyone who listens to hardcore! It's heavy, its fast, the vocals are clear and completely audible, the instruments are amazing, and it's radical. Oh you might need a dictionary to go along with this album because it's that advanced.

Ok, I ordered this record because I stumbled across the singers site and read a lot about his voice lessons and all. I therefore took a chance and ordered this...BAM! This albums is truly soooo good! I really love hardcore but specially the old-school influenced stuff and this is really great. I like bands who try to pass a message (personnal stories are good but there's just something that appeals to me more when bands get socio-political), this guy could write great lyrics and his band members could write some awesome sounding songs... this record instantly became a favourite and will easily pass the test of time with me...BUY it! It's too bad the band isn't anymore but they left some great stuff to be remembered for...

TRIAL DID IT AGAIN!,

This review is from: Are These Our Lives (Audio CD)
Trial is back! Ian from Equal Vision sent me this full length cd. I liked their "Foundation" mcd, but this one is truly great! For those who are familiar with hardcore music: imagine the old school sound (Judge/Burn) style with fast, raging Catharsis influences. Really good lyrics, just read them and you will see that Trial has what you seek: agression and deication...

I was not really too into Trial until I heard this CD. To me, Trial's past works do not even compare to "Are These Our Lives?" The quaility of the recording is much better, the quality of Greg Bennick's vocals is much better and the quality of the music is better. This record made me a Trial fan. If you're at all into metallic hardcore, this record is a must have.
