5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of style ...
This CD is incredible. It includes lyrics and one of the funniest, refreshing layouts I've seen in awhile. The must verges from punk ("No, You Don't Even Know") to rock ("To Be Broadcast Live") to the disco-esque ("Disco") and includes a Chris Williamson cover ("Shooting Star") done in classic '80's rock fashion. 2.0 out of 5 stars a bit too poppy for my taste really.
if your into babes in toyland, heavens to betsy, and bikini kill and more interesting bands like that, i think you'll be quite disappointed with this.
if you get rid of the song's political meanings, it just sounds like poppy indi punk crap.

If you enjoyed the lead singer/guitarist Kaia's self-titled album, you'll love The Butchies' remixes of the songs "Madame" and "Salamander" included on this CD. All three members of The Butchies have been involved with other bands and projects, but this trio is amazing together. Bass, drums, guitar, and Kaia on keyboards adds a new dimension to the old "three-piece band" syndrome. Get this album NOW.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kaia-Voice of an Angel, July 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Are We Not Femme (Audio CD)
This album is amazing, I am at total loss for words. This is the first Butchies album I bought, and now it has forced me to look into buying the others. Kaia, singer-guitarist, has an amazingly peaceful voice at times, but when she screams she can totally change the feel of the song. She is amazing, and absolutely gorgeous and I think I have a huge crush on her! The only thing is that I wish her vocals were turned up more, she seems to be swallowed up during a few of the songs, but never the less, her voice still rings through. If you haven't seen them live, please go, you will have a fabulous time. They are great musicians!

I love The Butchies. All of thier music is great. The best part is that they are even better live. Kaia also does some of her own stuff that is definitely worth checking out. Riot Grrrl Forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars hmm..., July 28, 2004

Well, I understand if you are not into pop sounding music. But, not all feminist bands are suppose to have one sound to them. It's about being open minded I thought. I think we should appreciate it and not alienate the difference in sound...because aren't we all on the same level of feminist belief? Besides all that this is a good album, which would be the only album I have heard of theirs. Thanks for reading my review.

if your into babes in toyland, heavens to betsy, and bikini kill and more interesting bands like that, i think you'll be quite disappointed with this.
if you get rid of the song's political meanings, it just sounds like poppy indi punk crap.
i really didn't like it.
i researched them thinking i'd enjoy them, but really, my tastes differ from this poppy, simple indi type.
the vocals aren't that impressive really, i don't feel like these "feminists" are actually politically progressive, their songs have a vulnerable air to them, a bit too sensitive and girly, they're songs don't really express the real fight attitude that feminism has. this isn't a very strong voice for young teenage girls.
if you want something a bit more interesting...search for the bands i listed above.
another real alternative to this band are Le Tigre.
