"I've got things bigger better & cheaper than anywhere else",

This review is from: Are You Being Served?, Vol. 11 (DVD)
--Mrs. Solcombe advertising her ladies' underwear department.Of the volumes in the second boxed set of this series (Seasons 6-10), volume 11 is the second best behind volume 9. 4 of the 6 episodes are 5-star. The only one that is dicey is "Roots?" This episode, which was not shown on some PBS stations, has the staff researching Old Mr. Grace's family lines. Things get racially controversial when the staff puts on a show revealing Grace's "roots." The other weak episode is "Conduct Unbecoming." Mr. Humphries is accused of stealing money from the till and is put on trial. The "court" scene is dull. One funny part of this episode is Capt. Peacock's pursuit of Miss Belfridge. The other shows are excellent, especially "The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocombe" which is one of my favorite post-Mr. Lucas episodes. Here, Mrs. Slocombe has the unrequited hots for Mr. Humphries. The staff reads a psychological report on the matter and it is decided that if Mr. Humphries "has a go at her" she'll be rid of the fantasies. Miss Brahms tries to help Mr. Humphries "have a go" in the box seats at the ballet. "Closed Circuit" has the staff making a video advertisement to play outside the store. The director is a "friend" of Mr. Humphries and their interaction is hilarious. In "Heir Apparent," introducing the boring Mr. Klein, Old Mr. Grace sees an old picture of Mr. Humphries' mother and announces that he left her in a certain "condition." Humphries' mother makes an appearance in the store to this man from her past. In "Sweet Smell of Success," Capt. Peacock reluctantly allows Mrs. Slocombe to sell her homemade perfume in the store that is promoted as attracting the opposite sex. Then, he finds out it may work too well. This DVD, like the others, has fun graphics on the menu pages with rotating photos of "Employee of the Month" Mr. Harmon and a lift conductor taking you to each episode. For those who want to try a post-Mr. Lucas volume of the series, volume 11 is the best one.

I am a great fan of AYBS. I will leave the plot breakdowns to better writers than I, just to say that I spent hours sitting and watching and laughing and enjoying these episodes that I have never seen on American TV as far as I know. The replacements for Mr. Grainger and Mr. Lucas and Mr. Grace are all new to me until now. Great show. I will watch this one over again and will look for more of the later shows in this series.

Old Mr. Grace Turns 90! (Volume 11),
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Are You Being Served?, Vol. 11 (DVD)
This DVD features the episodes, "Heir Apparent", "Closed Circuit", "The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocombe", "Roots?", "The Sweet Smell of Success" and "Conduct Unbecoming". The first four are from season 8 and the last two are from season 9. The episodes rank from 3-star to 5-star. The best episode is "Roots?" when the staff celebrate Old Mr. Grace's 90th birthday. While trying to find his roots, they rehearse "A Welcome In the Hillside" (a Welsh tribute), a Scottish dance, "We Come Up From Sumerset" (a Yokel tribute) and "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee" (a revival of the black and white minstrel show). The next best episode is "Conduct Unbecoming", when Mr. Humphries is accused of stealing from the till (or cash register). "Closed Circuit" is also funny with a rare scene at a restaurant instead of the floor. "The Sweet Smell of Success", which DOES include "The" in the title is funny, but disappointing with a bad ending and no explanation of what happens to Mr. Klein or even the position of senior salesman! "Heir Apparent" has funny scenes and good jokes, but a skimpy plot. Mr. Humphries (aka Old Mr. Grace Jr.)thinks he's Mr. Grace's son, but finds out he's not when Mrs. Humphries (also played by John Inman) comes to the store and proves them wrong. The worst episode is "The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocombe" when Mrs. Slocombe forms a crush on Mr. Humphries and takes to the bottle. It has funny scenes with customers, but is getting desperate when Mrs. Slocombe enters the canteen with a wig on. You have to admit that Mrs. Slocombe wearing a white wig down to her waist is desperate and not that funny! Most of these episodes are average, but "Roots?" makes up for the disappointing episodes and that's why I gave it 5 stars. So in conclusion, I would buy this DVD especially if you have seen Are You Being Served? before, but the first episode I would watch would be "Roots?" and then "Conduct Unbecoming". The DVD features are funny because the employee of the month is Mr. Harmon! If he did the best, the staff must not have even sold a quid's worth of merchandise!
