a pop masterpiece,

This record is one of those very few that I can say is brilliant through and through. I tend to be put off by pop music, as it is so frequently flashy and fluffy, but it has no real depth. "Are You Building..." is the exception to that. There's a melancholy feel to the record, despite all of its pep. Musically, it is fairly simple and straight forward, but it is perfection itself in terms of its songwriting and musicianship. I've studied the album trying to find even a spot where the guitar is off a bit or the drums miss a beat. I can't find one. Hands down, this is one of the best pop albums in the last few decades. Unfortunately, other Butterglory albums didn't seem to measure up to this one, so beware before you just purchase their other releases.

If you're reading this then you already know about Butterglory, so I don't need to tell you about the simple, heartbreaking songwriting and the western haunt of ghostly plains that seems to sweep across the spare harmonies of their musical landscape. "Are You Building a Temple in Heaven" is Butterglory at their finest, dripping with indie sensibilities, low-fi so low it's almost no, pop beats and drawn-down sounds, an amazing melange that's so good it's great. Of course, since you're reading this, you already know this. Tell your friends.

I bought this album by mistake when it was in the lambchop section(recommended!). I made myself listen to it two or three times and it started to grow on me. The drone of vocals is not the most appealing aspect of this album, the music though is very emotional, in an out of tune way.I cant comment on anything specific as the album was stolen some time ago, however track 3 has a strangely dark and attractive sound. the last track "the lion weeps tonight", builds up slowly and quietly and climaxes quite beautifully. |
