Polishing the Stone,

This review is from: Are You Dead Yet (Audio CD)
There are a good many reviews of this album that says it is trash. This is understandable, because it is a massive change from where the band began. But, being a fan of Billy Corgan, change is something that is first met with hatred...and slowly you start to see that is wasnt such a bad change...and then all of a sudden you fall in love with the album. This is the case for Are You Dead Yet?. If you are looking for a copy of something wild or Hatebreeder...then take on of those C/D's burn a copy, and listen to that. Bodom is changing. And the sound is amazing. Instead of songs with a sting of double base, they are broken up into powerful, intuitive riffs that rock harder than anything they have written to date. I cannot wait to go see this album performed live, its gunna be wicked... The band is making an album for concerts. They have gotten harder and louder with this album, and at the same time they are leting their talents show through more elegantly, pushing all the right buttons effortlessly. Yes, they fell away from the overwelming display of talent, the almost neo-classical approach to metal, but they are becoming a force of nature with this new album. I absolutly love it. It is just a solid sound that weaves in their talent instead of blatently showing it off...its worth a listen...download Are You Dead Yet? and make your own opinion. If you feel that evolving into a band that rocks harder is selling out...well, i think you are missing the point of rock, metal, and all jazz ;) thats only my opinion though. And btw, I rated it a 4 our of respect for Follow the Reaper...what a trip...

Better than I had expected, thats for sure.,

Well ladies and gentlemen, here it is, the fifth full-lengthed album by the Boys of Bodom: "Are You Dead Yet?". And to be honest, I had actally lost my hopes in buying this album, partly due to the fact that the cover song they chose for the single "In Your Face" was none other than Mrs. Spears' "Opps! I Did It Again!". And who could blame me; an awesome metal band from the wonderful metal-filled lands of Finland had covered a hit from the pop princess herself. "Why waste their time learning that song when they could focus that time and energy towards an original song of their own?" I had thought. But alas, they pulled through.Though none of the songs are anywhere near the likes of "Lake Bodom" or "Downfall", I still find myself humming to the tunes of "Living Dead Beat" and yelling the lyrics to "Are You Dead Yet?". I'm not going to go on and on about this album like most reviews do, so I'll go ahead and end it with this: CoB have changed their playing style (take HCDR for instance) but I think it suits them well and I look forward to their next album. Check a few samples out and decide for yourself but don't discard this album just because of the cover song, like I nearly did. And with that, I'm finished :)

I think that this album is not so bad.its not like hatecrew deathroll or FTR but its still nice. Some songs like "Living dead beat" and "if you want peace....prepare for war" are great and sound diffrent but great.Alexi said that this album is going to be diffrent then others and it is.i give four stars because i think that they still got it and are not gonna disappoint us CoB fans with theyr next album.

A Different Bodom,
By
This review is from: Are You Dead Yet (Audio CD)
This album is definitely a lot different from their other albums. It took me a little bit to get used to this album, but now, it gets better every time i hear it. I like how they use keyboards more for an atmospheric effect on this album. However, they still, of course, have the good ol keyboard and awesome guitar solos. Alexi throws out some awesome solos on this album, as well as Roope. I'm also pleased with the lyrics, as they head more towards death, like Hatebreeder and FTR, which Bodom is about.1. Living Deadbeat - 6/5 - One of my favorites of the album, uses keyboards for an atmospheric effect. Catchy chorus. Second favorite song. 2. Are You Dead Yet? - 4/5 - Catchy Chorus, other parts of song are kind of annoying. Solo's too short. 3. If You Want Peace...Prepare for War! - 6/5 - Very agressive song, and even has a triple solo with Roope, Alexi, and Janne. This is tied with Bed of Razors for my favorite Bodom song. The solos on this song go forever. Perfect song to listen to when you're mad or want to hear loud heavy music. 4. Punch Me, I Bleed - 4/5 - The slow song, has an awesome solo, but other parts could have been better. I like Angels Don't Kill better as far as slow songs go. 5. In Your Face - 4/5 - This song is growing on me. I didn't like it much at first but now it's awesome. more atmospheric keyboards, and chrous is catchy. Only part i don't like is "I don't give a flying f**k motherf****r" 6. Next In Line - 5/5 - Took a little bit for me to like this one too, but the solo just drew me in. My second favorite solo on the album. 7. Trashed, Lost, and Strungout - 5/5 - Awesome awesome song, first song i heard from the album. Alexi's voice is awesome in this song, and i love the guitar in this song. 8. Bastards of Bodom - 5/5 - I love the intro to this song! Typical Bodom themed song. Love the lyrics, especially "Don't need a reason, and i won't tell you why..." 9. We're Not Gonna Fall - 5/5 - The song itself is worth 4 out of 5, but i gave it 5 because of the solo. It starts at about 2:10 and goes for about 30 seconds. My absolute favorite. I LOVE that solo. Overall: 10/10 I admit this cd is not like the other Bodom albums but if you liked HCDR you will LOVE this cd. It's better in all aspects. Bodom keeps getting better and better.

HATEBREEDER AND FOLLOW THE REAPER ARE STILL BETTER,
By
This review is from: Are You Dead Yet (Audio CD)
The follow-up to 2003's 'Hate Crew Deathroll' It is more straight-forward than its predecessor and contanis some industrial elements while retaining COB's trademark sound, including the super-fast guitar and keyboard solos. The import+2 includes a Ramones Cover And Britney Spears Cover "0ops I did it again. But like I said "HATEBREEDER" and "FOLLOW THE REAPER" are still the best.

Very good new offering,
By

As you Bodom fans might know, C.O.B. delves into some interesting metalcore stylings here. To some degree, based upon the way the keys are played, some of the songs sound almost gothic/doom metal, with the exception of Alexi's voice. But I get the feeling that Bodom is expanding quite a bit musically, and are not adhering to the strict black metal approaches that they took from the Something Wild-era to Follow The Reaper. You could almost see this new approach coming when listening to Hate Crew Death Roll and Trashed, Lost and Strungout. Also, it appears that Alexi is really trying hard to sing, rather than just screeching his way through another album!Another good thing to hear is the new approach to songwriting/guitar playing that was taken on this album. Though like most Bodom albums it is highly melodic, it is more riff-based than any of their previous albums, in my opinion. My favorite song off this album, the one I can't get enough of, "If you want peace... Prepare for war," is a fine example of this. It starts of with some heavy drum beats, then goes into this flippin' sick, insanely fast 16th note downstroke metal riff that darn-near melts your face! And then, when the chorus kicks in, you get a 20-ton anvil of metal music dropped on your head with all that double-kick drum bass/pedal action going on. In typical Bodom fashion, all the monster shred soloing is still there which is a MUST in metal, because as we metal guitarists believe, playing with feeling is for chumps, and the album is just as heavy as any of the previous Bodom offerings. It's probably not as good, on a musical level as Hatecrew or Follow the Reaper, but it's a good offering nonetheless.

Sorrow sweeps the land of Bodom...,
This review is from: Are You Dead Yet (Audio CD)
I was so very dissapointed after going through this album!!! For a true COB fan the lack of solos and keyboads just don't cut it! We know and heard what COB can do and this is not even half of it! The songs are SO MUCH LESS technical, it's not even funny how the riffs are much more repetitive; at times sounding like nu-metal ::shivers:: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!! I am truly upset how my fav bands such as COB, Soilwork, and Arch Enemy can't seem to deliever anymore! My tip for them : STAY AWAY FROM MAINSTREAM METAL!!! Sadly I only enjoyed three songs in this album and do feel free to downlaod them, for this album is NOT worth buying! ::WEEP::TO DOWNLOAD: Track 01. Living Dead Beat -song is overall catchy and well done! Track 04. Punch Me I Bleed -a bit slow but "Bodomlike", awesome solo (too short!) -will remind u of "Angels Don't Kill" from Deathtoll cd -again lack of keyboards like most of the cd Track 06. Next In Line -my FAVORITE song in the cd VERY "BODOMLIKE"!!!!!!!!!!! -if only all the songs in this cd can be like this one... =( -best solo in this cd If u must buy this cd for ur Bodom collection do so, but I strongly urge u not 2 waste ur hard earned money on this. We can only hope for the next cd... ~Metal Mo If ur into COB try ~KALMAH - get ALL ALBUMS ~IMPERANON - get "Stained" ~SKYFIRE - get "Mind Revolution" and "Spectral" ~NORTHER - get "Dreams Of Endless War"

Is Children of Bodom dead?,
By Seventh son (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Are You Dead Yet (Audio CD)
After a grave disappointment with Hatecrew -2003, "Are you dead yet?" was a highly awaited COB release. After listening to it, I knew that this is the end of COB as we know it. I experienced similar notion with Swedish In Flames after the release of "Reroute to Remain".It seems that there are now very few quality bands that can survive and keep to their roots in this modern age of madness. I was greatly grieved by the outcome of the new Bodom. It is just missing the old power. Now it just sounds as if the lads really want to sell out. The album is not heavier, it is not musically more appealing and overall it is just pathetic. Moreover, the production is awful, the package is horrid... I would not recommend this album to any who likes the previous work of the COB men. This is not Children of Bodom any more and I am sad that yet another band of high quality diminished. I have no more expectations from this band. They have taken a different path. The past was great, the future brings bitter fruit. Terrible.

Beautiful,

This CD is beautiful. Period. Granted it doesn't have the same neo-classical sound as the first 3 Bodom albums (besides the diminished sweep arpeggio's in the solo in "Living Dead Beat") this album still makes me happy. Although they take a more metalcore/industrial sound by tuning to dropped C, Alexi *still* knows how to right songs, and goddamn, there isn't one song on this CD that I don't like. GOOD STUFF.
