Book Description

December 7, 2004
With this book, readers might just find their glasses half full-or better yet, overflowing...

In these pages is a collection of 24 self-tests developed by Dr. Janda, a clinical psychologist. The answers to these tests measure the reader's overall happiness-in everything from career and finances to health and relationships. Then the reader can see how their scores on these tests compare with those of others.

Next, Dr. Janda demonstrates techniques proven to increase happiness-and how the reader can implement them. Illuminated with personal anecdotes and relevant case histories, Are You Happy? also includes accessible summaries of the latest psychological studies that reveal what truly makes people happy.

This review is from: Are You Happy?: 24 Self Tests to Assess Your Happiness and Scientifically Proven Techniques to.. (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this book, but it didn't tell me much about myself that I didn't already know - my problem areas are just what I knew they would be, but there were, unfortunately, none of the advertised techniques to "get happier" in those sections.

My favorite thing about this book was the percentile rankings for the various tests at the end of each section. It's the first self-help book I've seen that allows you to compare yourself to others (not necessarily the healthiest thing to do, but certainly something I want to know). Sometimes, those percentile rankings made me wonder who his test subjects were. I suspect they are all from some reasonably prosperous, almost all-white suburb of a city in the US - culturally, the tests seemed a bit narrow. I am actually shocked at how materialistic most people must be, if the score spreads here are at all accurate.

It's a quick read, and might be helpful to a lot of people. Just don't expect any deep revelations from it.
