New Moms take heed,
By A. Reader (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
A "must read" for all new moms! The breastfeeding scenes are hilarious. I loved this book! Stephanie Lehman's "Are you in the Mood" contains great insight on the joys and frustrations of motherhood and marriage. I'm buying an extra copy to give my friend at her baby shower.

Another Winner from Stephanie Lehmann,

This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
Are You in the Mood is the August release from Strapless Kensington, an imprint of Kensington Books that publishes chick lit. Most of the books published under this imprint are breezy and light. However, "Are You in the Mood" breaks the mold a bit. It is neither breezy nor light, but instead thought-provoking, real, and compelling. And somehow, it is still chick lit. And I absolutely loved it!
Camille, heroine of the book, is a 30-something-year-old actress working off Broadway, living in NYC and trying to get her big break. She lives on her own in a tiny apartment, and is doing fine, but somehow knows that her life isn't complete. She has just met a new guy named Daniel, a responsible, caring man, if a little on the boring side. Camille thinks she is happy with him, but not exceedingly so. One night, an important critic from the NY Times sits in the audience of the play she is currently acting in. To her great surprise and delight, he ends up giving her a rave review, which Camille is certain will skyrocket her career into fame and fortune. She somehow knows everything will go well for her from now on. Daniel, however, acts as though he isn't so thrilled, and Camille decides that he perhaps he isn't the right man for her after all. After all, now that she is finally making it, she won't have time for him! But unfortunately, things don't quite happen the way they are supposed to. The rave review doesn't open any doors for her; Her best friend Lisa declares she is going to settle down with a man who doesn't make her extremely happy, but is rich, and willing; an agent Camille has just signed on with turns out to be a total slimeball; and worst of all, Camille discovers she is pregnant, which could ruin her career. What's a girl to do in this situation? Camille must make a choice. Will it involve settling down with Daniel and raising their child, gaining the security she craves, but not the excitement? How will she deal with her acting career? And just how hard is it to raise a child these days? What will happen when she runs into a famous actor/director that she's always wanted to work for, (and has a huge crush on) who doesn't know she's married with a child? This book was absolutely amazing and I couldn't put it down. Overall, I highly recommend Are You in the Mood to everyone, especially those who love reading about motherhood, friendship issues, and women trying to keep their careers afloat.

More Stephanie Lehmann!!!!!,
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
I was so glad to get back into Stephanie Lehmann's witty, vivid heartbreaking world. This one gives us great theater, questionable sex and ambivalent mothering. What more could you ask for? Sharp, funny, well-written, from the heart and entirely real. Keep 'em coming, girl!

Exactly how it is.....,
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
I overwhelmingly related with the main character in this book. It wasn't that she was an actress, it was that she was a new mother who not only questions being a mom but also questions being a wife. I am a mother of two who are only ten months apart and i found myself laughing as I read this book. A lot of the time I was saying "Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one who felt that way." I was a little annoyed by her at times but only because she questioned herself so much throughout the book. I thought about it though....being a woman, I do that all the time! Perfect book for mothers!

Shining Example of Great Mom Lit,
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
This is THE perfect book for any woman who has ever felt even a twinge of guilt when presented with the "ideal of motherhood." For goodness sake - breastfeeding isn't fun, getting up a million times each night isn't easy, and your "single, free woman" expectations and dreams don't suddenly evaporate once you have a ring on your finger... Stephanie Lehmann's book is an honest and fresh look at the realities of motherhood, that still manages to be a sweet, endearing story about the evolution of a woman's life. I'm eagerly awaiting her next book.

great fun!,
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
I loved this book and read it cover-to-cover over one weekend --(much to the chagrin of my in-laws!) I really couldn't put it down. Lehman has a talent for creating such wonderfully human characters and she deals with their flaws with humor & poignancy. I loved her first book "Thoughts While Having Sex," and I anxiously await her next one!

Such High Hopes,
By J.D. Salinger "Franny" (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
I found it impossible to identify with or appreciate the main character - she was snotty, selfish, and completely obnoxious. I am a new mother, and had hoped this book would help me get through the tough patches with a little bit of humor, but the writing style (overly simple) and the self-obsessed nature of the aspiring actress made it difficult to even finish the book.

Gets under your skin,

I loved this book. The witty prose was delightful to read and brought me right into the story. I kept finding different ways to identify with the struggle of the main character. I felt like she was inside my head. It raised many questions for me which continued to resonate long after I had read the final page. And it made me laugh out loud.

Ambivalence,

I love this book. I have never read a novel that deals so convincingly with conflicting feelings about becoming a mom. This novel is a ground breaker. Besides, I really liked the characters and Lehmann's sense of humor. I couldn't put the book down. Lehmann has a witty urban voice that rings true.

Read it if you like flighty, self absorbed characters,
By Georgia Anne Bell (New England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Are You In The Mood? (Paperback)
The title of this book is extremely misleading. Camille didn't even have a baby until halfway through the book.
Camille is a self-absorbed bad actress who doesn't even know if she likes, let alone loves, her psychiatrist boyfriend. She's always somewhere else when they have sex (can't call it making love, she's not even there with him at all). She's floating in the wind. Get a grip, girl! She has a baby and is shocked at how much work they are. She still can't stand her boyfriend and can't really acknowledge his feelings about fatherhood or the changes in their already dull relationship. Then she gets this flirty idea to pursue Eric Hughes? Puh-leeze. The character and her boring problems did not draw me in. Sure, there was an occasional funny moment. I read it only because my husband bought it for me, thinking it was humorous non-fiction in the vein of Erma Bombeck. NOT! Borrow it from the library is all I can say if you must read it. |
