I did not know what to expect from a solo record from Kathryn Calder. I am a New Pornographers fan and was very impressed with her when I saw the New Pornographers live a couple months ago. Knowing the story of how the record was made while her mother was dying I was expecting a somber album. I found the record to be upbeat, great songwriting, and the music delivered in a straight forward honest way. The album is strongest in the middle with Arrow and If You Only Knew. Every song is great and I find myself listening over and over which means that these are more than catchy songs. There is depth and nuances that are revealed with repeat listenings. I would highly recommend this album and I am currently wearing it out.

This record is more low-key than the music I usually listen to as a big New Pornographers fan, but I warmed up to it easily. As the "other" female Pornographer, Kathryn's voice is usually second fiddle to Neko Case's, but on this album it really gets to shine. She can do everything from an intimate whisper on "Slip Away" to bold belting on the end of "All It Is."
There is also a nice variety of songs here with varying tempos and moods, so the record itself is very easy and interesting to listen to. The only track that I wasn't a huge fan of was "So Easily," but even that track is decently good.
Admittedly, Kathryn earns extra points in my book for being so sweet and kind to her fans, chatting with them after concerts, etc. So I just plain like her all around.
Personal biases aside, "Are You My Mother?" is a hearty debut offering and I think we can expect more good things from Kathryn in the future.

The Song "So Easily" was featured on Warehouse 13 (episode "Trials"), a show with amazingly strong writing and character development, and I find this song by Kathryn Calder of the New Pornographers equally surprising.
Haunting, with sweet harmonies, this lament grabs at something child-like and elemental in each of us. If I hadn't gotten anything else out of watching that show, I got this song, and that's substantial.
The rest of the album varies from good to very good, from the quiet song about all it is, Slip Away, to the attempt to pull back something slipping away, "All It Is."
People who say new music is dead, hyper-commercialized junk aren't paying attention. This is good stuff.
