Aaliyah at her best,
By The Fancy One "blackprincess" (Westchester County, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Are You That Somebody Pt.1 (Audio CD)
As I'm typing this, I still can't believe that this talented young woman is gone. She was headed for superstardom, no doubt, when that plane crash cut her life short at the age of 22. But I thank God she left us the music to remember her by...and this song, "Are You That Somebody?" from the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack has got to be one of the best songs she's every done. In fact, this was the only song on that soundtrack that made it worth owning. I love the sound of the cooing baby and the syncopated beats. Timbaland, her producer, really captured Aaliyah's essence on this song. Although Aaliyah could handle both love ballads and uptempo stuff, I think she sounded her best when she sang hip-hop/R&B jams. This is an excellent dance song, and if you ever saw the video, you'll know why! Add this one to your collection....RIP Babygirl, we love you.

She Was That Somebody.,

This is one of my favorite Aaliyah songs. I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled this off the way she did. By the time this song's over, you'll find yourself driving along or roaming through the house or the mall, trying to make those infectious baby "coo-ing" sounds. That's just the way Aaliyah's sound is ... she makes you feel jello-y inside. My heart goes out to her family and to the families of those who accompanied her on her journey through the stars. We'll miss you Aaliyah. See you in Heaven sweetie.

Sometimes I'm goody goody, right now I'm naughty naughty,

With one of her usual suspects on board (the quirky beats of the one and only Timbaland), Aaliyah released one of her biggest hits Are You That Somebody in the summer of 1998. Built around the baby cooing and rattle shaking of a home movie clip of Baby Girl when she was a baby girl, she lets a crush know that she'd like to get together, but she calls the shots. Not because she enjoys pushing people around or being bossy, but because she wants to be sure that this guy is legit and worth her time. "If I let you know/You can't tell nobody/I'm talkin' bout nobody/Are you responsible?/Boy, I gotta watch my body/I'm not just anybody/Is it my go, is it your go?/Sometimes I'm goody goody/Right now I'm naughty naughty/Say yes or say no/Cuz I really need somebody/Tell me are you that somebody?" Although all of Aaliyah's albums are out of print in America, the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack should still be available. It's one of the best jams on it.

This is a great song. Unbelievably hard to find, unless you buy the soundtrack.

Why did she have to leave us here on Earth?,

Aaliyah was truly One in a Million. From her debut CD "Age Ain't Nothng But A Number" to her most recent self-titled, Aaliyah had the talent and personality that people loved. She didn't present herself in an immature fashion...and didn't dress too objectionable (ie: britney, christina). This was the single that got me hooked. It was catchy and had good beats. It was very popular among the Urban as well as Pop charts. Aaliyah also helped loosen the gap between R&B/Hip Hop and Pop. She also was good at acting and was beautiful as well. The "High and Exhaulted One" (which is what her name means in arabic) is now out of our hands and joining the greats to Sing for God. We didn't loose a star, we added an angel. But the only question was: why did she have to leave us so early? She will definatly be missed by her fans and the public in general. R I P Aaliyah Houghton ~*1979-2001*~

The Single, not the Person,

Since there are no tracks listed for this single, and everyone else is just talking about Aaliyah herself (who I really miss also, RIP), I will take it upon myself to review this record for those who might actually want to buy it. Let's see... well, there are only three tracks, Album Version, Instrumental, and A Cappella, in that order. Since anyone reading this has heard the song 1,000 times on the radio and MTV, you know what to expect. The song is good, seems better after you watch the video, and is a bit lacking lyrically, but made up for by another brilliant Timbabland production which, along with the video, inspired many imitators. Classic stuff. I would have rated it higher, but there really isn't much on this disc.

I love all of Aaliyah's music, but i wanted to review this one so that i can tell Lisa and Lora how to spell Aaliyah's name.R. Kelly, Timbaland, Static, along with all her past producers and co's have done such wonderful jobs on her albums and the songs that aren't included on the albums. I liked Aaliyah because she always came different and was real. I truely loved Aaliyah and i know most of the ppl who are reading this and the ppl yet to read loved her, too. So, if you have MSN, Yahoo, or anything that has that send file feature, send a picture or something of Aaliyah's to keep spreading her beauty, talent, and love.
