From Library Journal
Van Gelder and Brandt have written a refreshing alternative guide, not least but not solely due to its designated audience: lesbian and gay couples on an independent itinerary. Their sources for further information--listings of local organizations and magazines for the nine countries and 15 locales covered (all major tourist spots in addition to being gay and lesbian destinations)--will be helpful to couples who want to sort out the options after arrival. This practice is preferred by many gays and lesbians since establishments, not to mention government policies, change often and without notice. For each setting the authors supply a "Practical Information" section, preceded by a historical/cultural/anecdotal essay. Their "Practical Information" includes a critique of area hotels, restaurants, and side trips, and a recommended reading list. The authors' witty chats about "brothers and sisters" past and present is great reading for the armchair tourist and will put the novice at ease, while bringing back the seasoned traveler's own happy or harrowing reminiscences. Recommended for all travel collections .
