Product Description

The console port of the hit arcade game, Area 51 is a 2D shooter in which an alien infection has been spread through Area 51. You are a member of S.T.A.A.R., Strategic Tactical Advanced Alien Response Team. Your assignment is to eliminate all life forms who are located inside Area 51 as all of them are assumed to be infected. Gamers can use either a light gun or a gamepad. The gamepad requires the player to move crosshairs around the screen while the light gun simply requires users to aim before firing. While players are busy firing at the screen the game scrolls at its own pace. Visuals are provided by 3D full motion video characters who pop up on 2D rendered backgrounds to attack the player. By shooting these targets players gain points and/or special bonuses and power-up items, such as enhanced weaponry for example.

Area 51 is one of the best light-gun/arcade ports out there, and every time I play this I have a " nostalgia flashback " of epic proportions. OK, OK, I might have over stated it, but it is a great game that I still love to play. I love playing all my light-gun games on the Sega Saturn, like: House of the Dead, Virtua Cop 1-2, Revolution X, Scud, Die Hard Trilogy, and Ta Ta, Area 51. I just played Area 51 yesterday again, and I still had a ball playing this Atari classic. I just forgot how tired my arm gets after shooting my light gun for more than ten min. at a time. In Area 51 your an agent of the top secret organization STAAR, and it's your mission to help cleanse Area 51 ( a top secret military base ) of the alien scourge that's taken over the base. The aliens are genetically altering the soldiers that are guarding the military insulation. There's different modes to play which is pretty cool. If you shoot three team members ( without killing a baddie ) you go into the Hunter mode, and you play as an alien and you get to hunt the humans. ( it's fun ) There are five types of weaponry to use, you have: machine guns, pump shotgun, an auto shotgun, grenades, and the semi-auto pistol you start out with. If you're hit you downgrade back to the pistol from whatever weapon you are currently using. The game moves along as a on-rail shooter, and there are many upgrades and bonuses to collect. There are lots of aliens and alien zombies to fight, and they shoot rockets, throw bricks, and shoot guns at you. ( the turds ) When you see barrels shoot them, and they blow up nicely along with the alien scum standing next to them! Is the game dated?, yeah but so what! Read more ›

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Nostalgia plays a big play in picking up this game. Note: If you thought the graphics in arcade were crappy compared to todays standard, the translation is worse. A small bar I go to has an Area 51 machine and the arcade as higher resolution. When you have digitized graphics you shouldn't lower their quality but oh well still fun. If you end up buying this game a few notes, you will need a light gun. And it is really only fun if you are playing with friends so get two light guns.
