Book Description

May 10, 2005
From the author of Playing House comes a sharp and sophisticated collection of essays that takes us on a hilarious tour of our twenty-first-century obsessions and distractions.

Patricia Pearson is a working woman, wife and mother on the verge. Whether it’s being humiliated by the Beauty Bullies at the Lancôme counter or failing to live up to the Serene Mother ideal, Pearson is fed up with negotiating our present-day myths and fads. In Area Woman Blows Gasket, Pearson plumbs every facet of modern life, marriage and motherhood: from choosing the right vegan-bran-hemp diet for your family to confronting your husband’s irrational fear of mayonnaise. Adult education classes, psychotherapy, $100 haircuts, the latest news on what may or may not cause cancer, Christmas shopping — all come into sharp focus with the help of Pearson’s comic eye. Her wry brand of wisdom is a refreshing and long-awaited release from the contradictions thrown at us by society.

Review

Praise for Playing House:
“Think Bridget Jones’s Diary and Sex and the City meet Good Housekeeping and Today’s Parent. Vodka tonics meet baby bottles. Designer clothes meet grubby little hands…. Patricia Pearson made me laugh out loud.”
Ottawa Citizen

“I felt as if I had been entertained at a dinner … where I had grabbed the arms of my dinner mates on either side, mothers all, to keep myself from falling off my chair in laughter.”
The Globe and Mail

“Too well written to be dismissed as ‘chick lit.’”
Times-Colonist

“A fresh and lively romp … will leave you lusting for more.”
Toronto Sun

“Fresh, funny and sweet without being sugary.”
Chatelaine

5.0 out of 5 stars What a riot!, August 14, 2006

This book of essays is one of the most entertaining musings on family life (with several great side trips -- such as a hilarious piece on quitting smoking) that I've ever read. Several of the essays were so funny, that I was crying while laughing. I had to read several of them aloud to my husband because he felt so left out of the jokes.

High marks to this absolutely hysterical collection of tales from the domestic frontier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, September 1, 2010

At the risk of being crude, I laughed my ass off while reading this book. It is a series of articles, often no more than 2 or 3 pages in length, about various random topics that crossed Patricia Pearson's mind. No one thinks quite the way she does about these things. Every thought leads into various other thoughts, all slightly odd and all hilariously funny. I've already read it, but I'm reading it again. Too funny!
