A refreshing look at language creation,
By Aron C Heintz (Towson, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Arenas of Language Use (Paperback)
This earnest book is organized as a series of tracts. Its academic tone is not designed for popular audience. That said, its well organized - progresses logically from one topic to the next, building upon its previous material. Different chapters introduce combination of new theory, survey of existing theories, and descriptions of his experimental research results.
Clark, et al. debunk, and go well beyond, static analysis of language structure, to experimentally discover the PROCESS of language - collaboration between speaker and listener(s). How do we establish common reference? How can/do we know listener(s) are comprehending our discourse, contribution by contribution? My girlfriend is a linguist, so I picked up this book; I found it fascinating; although it is clearly intended for an academic audience, I was able to grasp all his key concepts - insights that I now use creating crisp conversations in my everyday life. |
