Grade 3-4?Breezy texts punctuated with exclamatory sentences give a quick overview of the history, population, major cities, and culture of these countries. Two-page spreads examine such topics as transportation, foods, leisure pastimes, traditions, and celebrations. Readers learn that Argentines enjoy ravioli and lasagna (noted twice in this brief text) and "...find lots of reasons to party!" while Brazilians "tend to get pretty wild when they're behind the wheel of a car," "love to eat," "love music," and their "kids love shaking maracas." Gross generalizations, stereotypical portrayals and some poor writing, e.g., "Big cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo have very, very rich people and really, really poor people," characterize these superficial overviews. The colorful covers and inviting layouts with sidebars and lots of full-color photographs may attract readers but they will be disappointed by the lack of substance.?Daryl Grabarek, School Library Journal
