Beautiful, but not solid wood--finish chips off easily!,
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Argington Ayres Twin Bed- Red Maple (Toy)
I purchased the toddler bed in this line and the twin and matching trundle and guard rails, all in the red maple finish. I am an American living in Quebec City. At Canadian prices, this came to over $2,000 and shipping was delayed, plus we ended up paying customs which we didn't expect as we were ordering from a Canadian site (the online store later refunded the customs charges). Even with the ordering issues, I would have been happy had the products been of high quality. There were no reviews on these products when I bought them 4 years ago, and had there been, I don't think that I would have purchased these. We were looking for something modern to fit in our very contemporary home. I am one to spend money on a stylish, quality product that will last rather than buying a cheaper, temporary item that one cannot stand to look at. I also loved that these are made with non-toxic finishes and glues and sustainable wood. The items are gorgeous style-wise and fit very well in our contemporary home. But I expected a solid wood product at these prices! The items appear to be made of wood (hopefully not just plywood, as other reviewers seem to think--I cant tell) and finished with a good-looking veneer that is incredibly non-durable. I won't even let me cleaning lady vacuum or mop in the kids' room anymore because the finish chips off so easily! I wish I were exaggerating. My cleaning lady scooted the bed without removing the trundle first (as I had requested her to do) which caused the finish to come off where the drawer knocked the bed. Additional scratches/rub marks form easily if one pulls the drawer out and it rubs, if not squared. These marks appear even when being VERY careful! I knew to be extremely careful vacuuming and to square and pull the drawer out VERY slowly as we had put the toddler bed into use first and it was developing many dings from normal use (and also came with a small crack in the finish from the manufacturer in a not-so-visible area) When my cleaning lady was mopping a 2 inch by 1 inch piece of veneer chipped off the base of the toddler bed. I know my cleaning lady is not as careful as I am, but NO other piece of furniture in the house looses its finish with a tap from the vacuum or mop! Now this may not be the case with the other finishes. Maybe the birch finish is solid wood, but the red maple finish looks to be birch covered with a "red maple" veneer. I expect that the cherry finish would be the same type of thing. If you do purchase this anyway, as there are not a lot of contemporary options out there, you need to know that you will be constantly reminding your children, your cleaning help and yourself to be careful to not ding the furniture and that it will have many little dings in no time, no matter how careful you are with it! Such a shame, because, were this not the case I would buy the matching bookcase.... I recommend this line of Argington products for the style, but not where durability is concerned.

Plywood, Assembly Issues, No Customer Service Support,

I wonder if the other reviews were written by Argington or if I was just unlucky enough to have a bad experience with them. Despite the other reviews, my husband insists the bed is made of plywood and not real wood. The parts did not line up square, the screw holes were too big, and my husband had to find parts to use for assembly. He tried calling and emailing Argington. I called them twice. No response at all. No answer ever. As a small business owner, I like to support other small businesses. But it's not ok to ignore your products' issues ... or your customers. In sum, their products are not worth the money. (I also purchased the night stand, trundle, bed rails, and eiffel bookcase).

poor customer service,
This review is from: Argington Ayres Twin Bed (Toy)
My wife and I bought the bed for our 3 year old son. The bed has to be assembled and we found that the drill holes were too big for the screws they provided. When we called Argington, a representative repeatedly promised delivery of replacement screws that never materialized.
When I asked to speak with a supervisor or manager, I was told by the representative that she was the only one there. Yikes!

Nice looking, easy to assemble. If you are buyng for a little kid, think about the height. It is quite high up from the ground.

This bed is a complete waste of money. The website we bought it from had to refund our money when we emailed them pictures of it. It cracked in transit, since it's not solid wood. I would not recommend buying this bed. It will not last long and is made in China. We replaced it with a Ducduc bed, and we are very happy to have a very well made and long-lasting piece of furniture.

beautiful craftsmanship,

This piece of furniture is beautifully constructed and a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship. It is REAL WOOD made of multiple layers of birch - and the grain/make of the wood is GORGEOUS. not just some silly layer of wood over MDF. Very solid, very easy to assemble. We are really picky about cheap looking wood / fake wood products that are most of what is available at this price point on the market.... and we are totally satisfied with the aesthetics of this bed. Be aware - because it's real wood, it is heavy... but, i think that's a good thing. We have the birch bed with white trundle and white rails. The birch grain is visible and very attractive with really nice corner work / construction. The white is not that cheap stick on white finish - it is a high gloss white pain that looks as clean as the stick on finish does, but won't chip away / wear away.
We received the wrong screws when we received it (4 long and 6 short instead of the reverse required 6 long and 4 short). We contacted the company and they were GREAT. They sent screws that we received two days later. Also, one of the tables was damaged in transit and they were SUPER accommodating about replacing it. TOTALLY recommend. very high quality. Our only complaint is that the trundle is not on a track. this makes the bed more attractive, but means that you have to be very careful pulling it in and out or you will leave marks on the bedframe. We have given the kids a rule that they are not to play with the trundle and that it is only for adults to take out. Great bed. Great company. Eco Friendly. Family run.

Beautiful and Practical,
This review is from: Argington Ayres Twin Bed - Ebony (Toy)
We have owned ours for the last four months and we love it. It took us about 20 minutes to assemble and our son who is three will likely use it until he goes to college. The clean lines will make this first bed still look relevant in 15 years. We will also be purchasing the trundle to with it to provide more sleeping and storage options.
I have read other reviews and found that some have remarked on the corners being sharp / unsafe. In reality, the corners are ever so slightly rounded and all of the edges are beveled - we have no concerns about the styling. Our two and three year olds can climb onto and off of the bed easily - the platform design makes this possible. We are using the bed rail guards with ours. Another unexpected benefit of this design is that the plaform sides of the bed rest flush with the wll, even with bedding on it. No lost toys behind the bed! In fact, the little ledge even offers my son a handy place to put his beloved toys and a sippy cup. In short, it is a lovely and versatile piece - we plan to get another bed and trundle set for our younger son as soon as he is old enough! |
