Book Description

Many people never engage in formal debate, but argumentation is a naturally occurring dimension of most relationships. The authors, embracing a narrative approach to arguing, clearly demonstrate the role that arguments play in understanding complex issues, forming opinions, shaping discussions, and resolving disagreements. The first part of this highly useful text introduces students to the component areas and principles of argumentation; the second part discusses the unique traits of argumentation in specialized settings. Chapters include complete lists of key terms and stimulating activities.

I've enjoyed reading this for my Argumentation and Advocacy public speaking class at SJSU. It's worth your time if you are taking such a class!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that happy with the narrator., October 8, 2010
Here is the good news. This book has a lot of significant vocabulary that can help improve one's knowledge of argument. Majority of the other texts that I looked at were lacking in content. However, the writing style of this book in my opinion isn't very straight forward and uses too many words to describe such vocabulary (and points) and often leaves me, the reader, confused. So, I'm left with just trying to compare the long examples with what he has to say. Perhaps it is just me lacking reading comprehension skills, so I gave this a neutral rating of three stars.

I am going to try another book, "Critical Thinking and Communication: The Use of Reason in Argument." This is another text that my school is using for my argument class.

Good luck in finding the right one!

-Hopefully there will be more reviews. For the next year of students thinking of buying this text.

*edit: found out that the glossary in the back has better definitions than what the narrator defines in the textbook. Also this textbook needs editing and has some errors with grammar. Now it gets a two star.
