It's always fun to discover a talented new author and for me, Margaret Lake is my latest. Ariana's Pride is her first novel; it is an auspicious debut.

At its core, this is a travel saga, telling the story of Lady Ariana Devoe and Jeremy as they make their way, mostly on foot, from her father's castle, after it has been captured in a short, fierce battle, to the estate of the Baron of Pemdale, to whom Ariana is betrothed. As with any journey, lots of things happen, both good and bad. Lake keeps the story moving and the reader guessing about what is in store for the two main characters. This is really Ariana and Jeremy's story; while secondary characters appear throughout, some more well written than others, the focus is always on the protagonists.

The story was well written with lots of historical detail, which I always enjoy. There were two very small plot "flubs" which I think could have been tweaked and would have taken the book from "very good" to "great" (and the reason for my 4 star rating instead of 5). Lake seems to be a careful and meticulous author and I imagine that she will learn from this--I would be surprised to see the same thing happening in subsequent offerings.

And I do hope there are subsequent offerings! As I said above, this is a wonderful debut novel from a talented author. I look forward to reading more from Margaret Lake. Adriana's Pride: recommended.

With "Ariana's Pride", Margaret Lake has managed to mix a history lesson with a spoon full of sugar. I hope that we have not heard the last of Ariana, Jeremy, the "War of the Roses" or Margaret Lake.

I love historical fiction, and this book really takes you back to 15th century England. Ariana and Jeremy are real people who are caught between who they are and their stations in life. The book had wonderful twists and turns that kept me reading to see what would happen next. I will definitely be reading this book again and again.
