Editorial Reviews

This album is dedicated to Anna de Amicis, the famous soprano who first created the role of Giunia in Mozart s Lucio Silla. In addition to works by the young Mozart, this disc includes works by Jommelli, J.C. Bach, Gluck and others. Up-and-coming Romanian soprano Teodora Gheorghiu studied with Niculina Mirea and Gheorghe Rosu in Romania and has won several prizes including the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2004. She made her debut with the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest singing the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. Outside of the opera house, her career has also flourished in recital and concert appearances. Gheorghiu is supported here by the brilliant conductor Christophe Rousset leading his orchestra Les Talens Lyriques.

Young Romanian soprano Teodora Gheorghiu (as far as I know no relation to Angela Gheorghiu)
Makes a splash in the world of classical music with this fantastic debut album of arias written
For the virtuosic coloratura soprano Anna de Amicis, a favorite of Mozart, whose vocal ability
(if it's any indication by the difficult music written for her) must have been unmatched at the time.

The music written for Anna de Amicis covers a vast vocal range though it sits mainly in upper-middle of the lyric soprano tessitura, and its coloratura is unrelenting often combining legato singing with intense coloratura passages that go in an out of the upper register (over and over to high D). It seems de Amicis had a facility with triplet divisions and staccati high notes, for the music written for her is full of those vocal patterns. It's very difficult music, with long coloratura passages that remind of the castrati repertoire some decades earlier.

Teodora Gheorghiu overcomes the difficulties of the music with extraordinary ease; her intonation is rock solid even on the fastest passages, her staccati are clean and seemingly effortless, her triplet divisions are accurate and seemingly easy for her. Gheorghiu's range (based on her repertoire) must be from the A below middle C to the E above soprano high C (A3-E6), and in this recital much of it is called for - such as in the closing aria "E fra tante tempeste... Se balena" in which the vocal line is made up of hundreds of staccati triplet divisions going over and over to high C and high D as well as descending over and over down to low B-flat.

Gheorghiu's coloratura technique is wonderful, but she also displays a fine soft grained voice in the more lyrical numbers such as Mozart's "Sposo, mia vita...

Romanian soprano Teodora Gheorghiu is new to this listener and she makes an impression for several reasons: she is beautiful in appearance and in musical intelligence, she has a remarkably well focused soprano voice that is as agile as any singing today, and she has an adventuresome spirit as is evident in making an album that focuses on an all bout forgotten soprano of yesteryear, Anna de Amicis. The following information is offered to the public about this little known lady: `Only a handful of singers during the Classical period achieved the superstar status that caused all and sundry to rave about their prowess. Soprano Anna de Amicis was one of these, for the leading composers of the day sought to create works that were calculated to show off both her technically awesome vocal abilities and her famed acting ability. Charles Burney, especially, raved about her stunning high E and the fact that she was able to do a true staccato, and Leopold Mozart said pithily that she "sings and acts like an angel." That is high praise indeed, but perhaps it was fated to be so. She was born into a family of singers in 1733 and by the age of 20 was beginning to tour France and England as a professional. By the 1770s she was arguably the best soprano in all of Europe, and the fact that she was extremely personable did not diminish her reputation one bit (divas, take note!). What is more, she had the wisdom to end her career voluntarily in 1782 at the height of her fame, not only leaving the field open to successors, but not going into dotage as a fading light as her vocal powers waned.'

For this daring exhumation of a sparkling bit of history Teodora Gheorghiu presents a program of Amicis's greatest hits, demonstrating that her reputation was not unwarranted.
