5.0 out of 5 stars An essential volume for sopranos
The new G. Schrimer/Hal Leonard vocal editions have been greatly improved. This excellent, 200 page volume features 31 arias appropriate for beginning (Vedrai, carino) as well as advanced (Jeux veux vivre) voice students. The arrangements and piano reductions have been updated for accurancy, and optional ornaments are included. A section at the beginning includes...

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely for the More Advanced Soprano Vocalist
Next time, I'll check the titles of the songs more closely. I already have many of these arias in my old copy of Schirmer's Arias for Coloratura Sopranos. I was looking for something that had more arias for the beginner-intermediate level soprano. This is a good book for the more advanced soprano particularly coloratura's, however.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential volume for sopranos, September 15, 2000
This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
A section at the beginning includes notes on each opera as well as literal line by line trandlations-there are no rhyming "english versions" of the words listed in the score itself. Most voice teachers I have known own this book and recommend it to their students.(Other recommendations for voice students -The "Oratorio Anthology" for soprano, "The First Book of Soprano Solos", and "The Prima Donna's Album", all published by G Schirmer/Hal Leonard Press. )The book includes classics such as "O mio babbino caro" as well as modern offerings such as "The Willow Song" from "The Ballad of Baby Doe" I am including a list of the arias found in this volume-perhaps the previous reviewer will change her mind. the title of the opera is in CAPS THE BALLAD OF BABY DOE: "Willow Song," " The Silver Aria," UN BALLO IN MASCHERA "Saper Vorreste" LA BOHEME " Mi chiamano Mimi," "Quando men vo," "Donde lieta," CARMEN "Je dis que rien ne m'epouvante" LES CONTES D"HOFFMAN "Elle a fui, la tourterelle" DON GIOVANNI "Batti batti, o bel maseto" "Vedrai carino" FALSTAFF "Sul fil d'un soffio etesio" FAUST "Ah! Je ris de me voir" FIDELLIO "o war ich schon mit dir vereint" DER FREISCHUTZ "Kommt ein schlanker Bursch gegangen" GIANNI SCHICCHI "o mio babbino caro" GIULIO CESARE "V'adoro, pupille" MADAMA BUTTERFLY "un bel di vedremo" MANON "adieu, notre petite table" THE MEDIUM "The black swan" "Monica's Waltz" LE NOZZE DI FIGARO "Porgi, amor," "Dove sono i bei momenti" "Deh vieni, non tardar" I PAGLIACCI "Stridono lassu" RIGOLETTO "Caro nome" ROMEO ET JULIETTE "Ah! Jeux veux vivre" DER SCHAUSPIELDIREKTOR "Bester Jungling" TARTUFFE "Fair Robin I Love" TURANDOT "Signore ascolta" "Tue che di gel sei cinta" DIE ZAUBERFLOTE "Ach, ich fuhl's"

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a great book for both beginner and expert singers, June 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed singing songs from this book. It has a collection of songs from operas such as "Carmen", "Madama Butterfly", "La Boheme" and many others. They come in a variety of languages. It has songs that work for pretty much any level of voice-- from beginners to experts. It contains songs such as "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "The Willow". It is definately worth getting if you are an opera fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all!, January 24, 2005
This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
This collection has over 30 songs from 23 operas (Classical to Contemporary period). It contains 18 pages of Notes and Translations where each song is described (the Act and Scene it was taken from, what is mainly going on in the opera before the song is sung) and a line-by-line English translation.

True to its title, "Arias for Soprano" doesn't concentrate on a particular kind of soprano. If you are just developing your voice (and therefore still experimenting), this is good for you since it has a little bit of everything except arias for a mezzo-soprano (there's a separate book just for them!). Of course, teachers with students having different vocal qualities will benefit from this book.

Unlike "The French Song Anthology" and "The Lieder Anthology", the bars are not numbered. But at over 30% off of its original price, and with free shipping, it's not bad at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great First Book for Learning Opera Arias, May 29, 2011

This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
I like this book because it not only contains the familiar arias from the famous Operas, but also good pieces from some not so familiar ones. It gives the beginner a broader choice of music and allows for expanding your repetoire. Easy to read and easy to learn. Good book!

This is a great book of soprano arias. Some popular ones, and some not-as-popular ones. This is a great selection to have on hand.

This is a wonderfull source for sopranos. All of your favorite aria in one edition. Very handy when coaching. Does not weigh down your book bag the way full scores do.

The book came fast, the order came altogether and the price was half of what I would have paid at the publisher's website.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for beginning sopranos, September 25, 2008
This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
I am so glad that I bought this book. It has quite a few of the beginning to intermediate aria favorites. My voice teacher was quite happy to use this book to help me develop my voice rather than the favorite but extremely overused "24 Italian Songs and Arias".
I have sung quite a few songs out of this one, and I know I will sing more in the future.
This is a book that is for ALL sopranos. It contains arias for many different voices. Dramatic and Lyric sopranos alike will find songs within this book.
My only real complaint is that I am currently doing "Deh vieni, non tardar" and it doesn't have any optional variations at the end, and at the beginning there are stars where the appoggiaturas should be, instead of writing the actual appoggiatura.
The translations are quite useful and really help with the choosing of the songs. But in order to fully perform the song, it is still necessary to look up the words individually.
But overall a great buy, who can beat the price? All operatic sopranos will wind up singing at least one song from this book, I can guarantee that. Nothing beats owning your own music. :D

This book is by far my most tried and true friend. I bought it again because I not only overused and spilled numerous cups of coffee on my last book, but I took it with me everywhere and I would lose my own head if it weren't attached. Nonetheless, I digress.

I have had this book (in one form or another) since I started studying classically 10 years ago. It includes a good variety of arias from various operas across all languages and over the course of opera history. It is an excellent book for college students, because the music is very legible and approachable. Larson has included many stylistic suggestions (appogatura and melismas), as well as a program notes section that includes scene descriptions and translations (which are far better than all in-music texts in other soprano anthologies). I often find it easier to use this music in auditions rather than provide score copies to an accompanist.

This volume, along with the coloratura, oratorio, mezzo-soprano, and volume 2 soprano should be staples in any younger singer's library, and are great references for high school and college professors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arias for Soprano, July 28, 2007
This review is from: Arias for Soprano: G. Schirmer Opera Anthology (G. Schrimer Opera Anthology) (Paperback)
These books are great. I own the coloratura edition, also, along with the Standard Literature book. They are accurate and easy to read. There are also usually a few different options for cadenzas.
