Book Description

"Irritating, insufferable, admirable, stimulating, disappointing Rodó: . . . you are part of our family quarrels, and must bear with your disrespectful, equally disappointed, intuitive, incomplete nephews, living in a world that you helped define for us, and offered unto our revolt."--from the Prologue by Carlos Fuentes First published in 1900 Uruguay, Ariel is Latin America's most famous essay on esthetic and philosophical sensibility, as well as its most discussed treatise on hemispheric relations. Though Rodó protested the interpretation, his allegorical conflict between Ariel, the lover of beauty and truth, and Caliban, the evil spirit of materialism and positivism, has come to be regarded as a metaphor for the conflicts and cultural differences between Latin America and the United States. Generations of statesmen, intellectuals, and literary figures have been formed by this book, either in championing its teachings or in reacting against them. This edition of Ariel, prepared especially with teaehers and students in mind, contains a reader's guide to names, places, and important movements, as well as notes and a comprehensive annotated English/Spanish bibliography.

Editorial Reviews

Review

--Los editores --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful, February 6, 2009
First published in 1900 Uruguay, This book contains wonderful insights about the esthetic and philosophical sensibility, In a subtle manner, the conflicts between Ariel, the lover of beauty and truth, and Caliban, the evil spirit of materialism and positivism, reflect the cultural differences between Latin America and the United States. Furthermore, Ariel contains a guide to names, places, important movements and a comprehensive annotated English/Spanish bibliography.
Very insightful!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes you think about American values and culture., April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ariel (Paperback)
This is a very insightful book today as much as it was when it was first published in the late 19th century. It really is a work of art as much as a statement of our image to others. Everyone should have to read this book as they question the reality that sculpted their identity. The only thing that is missing is more information on Latin American values and shortcomings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch this jewel essay !, November 8, 2004
This review is from: Ariel (Paperback)
Rodo was besides a remarkable thinker a poet . In these pages you will find important reflections about the values who feed the Greek Civilization and Rodo in the middle of his efervescent mind considers the posibility to turn back this dream in America .
Expressions such as : "For the greeks the word was before anything a will appendix" or "Greece shone because it had the young soul" are the final result of a long period of reflection and deep thinking .
A neglected book that it deserves a better place in the world .
