Book Description

2003
Embryonic Landscapes, a new book devoted to Mexican-born New York-based artist Ariel Ruiz i Altaba, is a collection of images of embryonic forms and the space they create. The subjects are taken mostly from the artist's own molecular embryology research; but Altaba has made art out of these objects, commonly understood only in a medical or anatomical sense, presenting them in new and unexpected contexts. Embryonic Landscapes challenges current stereotypes of science and scientists, breaking down boundaries between science and art, presenting a dialogue among the creative voices emerging from all disciplines--with texts by scientists, writers and authors including John Berger, William T. Vollman, Carter Hodgkin, and Joan Fontcuberta. This is a book about the pleasure of beholding and attempting to comprehend nature; it is as well an inquiry into the reality and meaning of the images which form the basis of our interactions with nature, and the foundations of our essential selves.
