This book will go down in history as the first chapter book my burgeoning reader consumed completely on her own. Don't let the Disney name fool you, the only thing Disney about this is Ariel and the other characters. The story is completely original (a mystery!) and even Ariel's personality is more assertive and independent than that femme fatale version of her on screen. The prince stays home while the princess has her mysterious adventure, solving riddles, finding clues. There's no evil older woman to get in the young ingenue's way either. The only challenges she faces are the natural limits of her own intelligent deciphering of the clues along the way to solving the mystery. The comic relief offered by Scuttle is transformed on the page to clever and hilarious wordplay that sent both my daughter and me in a fit of giggles. Highly recommend this entire series to get your young reader who still likes pretty color pictures well on the way to independent and enjoyable reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for 1st graders December 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My first grader loved this book! Unlike some of the other chapter books for her age, this one had beautiful color pictures every few pages, which is a nice transition from her younger picture books to chapter books. The text is still a bit advanced for her reading level, but she was enagaged in the story and looked forward to reading a couple of chapters each night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my almost 5 year old January 3, 2014

We recently discovered these short chapter books at a book fair. My daughter LOVES them! She's usually so hyper at night when it gets to be bed time, but these have really calmed her down. There aren't very many pictures, so she really has to listen to the story and create the image in her mind. I love the time that we have together when reading these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Early-Reading Princess-Lovers March 16, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My daughter is four and a half and just starting to read. I was looking for some longer books that I could read TO her along the way and she requested they be about princesses. I was wary because I'm not a big fan of the Disney ladies but I've found that the plots in this book series are generally better than the originals! Since the stories all take place after Happily Ever After, the gals can have adventures beyond "finding and capturing a man." :-)

In this story, Ariel has to solve a mystery when a young girl she's been teaching goes missing. It's a fun story line and my daughter enjoyed listening to it. We read a couple chapters a night and I liked being able to introduce her to the idea of a story that unfolds over time -- unlike the short picture books we read in a single sitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read with children depending on attention span January 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Be sure and check the page count. I didn't look before I jumped and my 5 year old niece saw Ariel on my kindle app at bedtime! We only got about 1/3 of the way through before I realized I'd have to tell her we'd finish it the next day because we just didn't have that much time to read that night. She was entranced and like me would keep herself up all night to finish if given the opportunity. The next day she kept asking when we could read the rest of it. I think we have a hit on our hands where she is concerned. It was a little long for a single bedtime reading but outside of the time factor I don't have any quibbles. She loved it and it made for a good way to pass some time together.

i loved this book a lot! i recommend it for girls who like a short relaxing book. although it was really easy for a second grader like me, it had many details and it was a lot of fun to read! ariel is my favorite princess also because she sings well and i swim like a mermaid! if you read this book along with another disney book called The Birthday Surprise, you will like this one better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable New Take On the Princess Stories August 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this "chapter book" to my six year old grandaughter in two sessions over two days. She absolutely loved it, and we were able to discuss the characters & happenings as we read. It had mamy good elements of character & plot. I will definitely look for other books in the series. Older children would enjoy reading it themselves. A new twist to the princess stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars My five year old is in love with this book March 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
We have read it several times, Ariel is her favorite princess and this is a great addition to the movie The Little Mermaid. It is a book with short chapters. The first time we read it, I was planning to just read a couple of chapters a night but she didn't want me to stop so we went all the way through. This is one of her favorite books on kindle.
