4.0 out of 5 stars More wordy than the single version, September 9, 2010
This review is from: Ariel (MP3 Download)
This is a great song, and let's face it--a throwback to the days when you could actually get stuff like this played on the radio. It's got a compelling, innocent, kitschy story line, a great chorus, and Friedman's voice is "everyman"--certainly not "great", but he's on pitch, and that's all that really counts.

I was actually hoping to find the edited "single" version with which I first became familiar with this tune; the one that actually played on radio. The edited version has the first chorus come right after the line "She was looking for change--and so was I". Then the second verse is actually the second part of the FIRST verse in THIS version--"She was a Jewish girl, I fell in love with her..." The song actually worked much better with the editing, as the original second verse about going to Dairy Queen and the girl forgetting to tell him that she didn't eat meat is just really poorly-presented; it almost sounds hurriedly composed, and the rhyme meter in it is awkward and weak. Friedman should have recognized that the produced did him a favor by editing this verse out, but it seems to be included on all the version (here, iTunes) that I have found.

Still, the song works alright, I just wish you could find the more charming single version.

I love this old tune - I wanted it for my Sony MP3 player - I could not find it on the other more popular MP3 site but Amazon had it!

I've been wanting a copy of this song for years. I did not find this on I tunes; but, I'm glad I found it here. It's a kitchy old song but I like it and it's lots of fun. Highly recommended.

I used to play the short sanitized version of this on the radio in the midwest. Growing up with the lights of NYC out my back window, the bits about the TV station signing off and all that were very familiar. I don't know how many people outside of that area "got it."
