This is a bit expensive for its size but overall it's a decent machine and the built quality is excellent (steel constructed). I've only used it ones on 4-6 inches of wet snow (wet as in snow mix with rain aka New England powder) and I had no issues with the performance. I'll have to wait for a bigger storm to really test this machine.
2011-2012 models of the Compact 22 now comes with 208cc Ariens OHV engine by LCT...No longer the Subaru engine from previous model. (The Compact 24 comes with a 205cc Ariens Polar Force engine by Briggs & Stratton.) There's a lot of controversy about the Chinese made LCT engine, but it is more powerful than the previous Subaru. This LCT engine has been around 3-4 years on other models (Sno-Tek), so it should be reliable (IMHO).
The Ariens come with cast iron gear case with top-fill feature and a five-year warranty. This means you can check the gear oil and change if needed. This gear case design is superior to most gear case I have seen that are mostly split-design. The Oil is L-3 Synthetic gear lubricant which is a 75W140 Synthetic Gear Oil. I checked my gear oil and it came short so make sure to check yours....same for engine oil (5W30)
LED halogen headlight - a lot of people complain that their light didn't work. Mine came only half way plugged in (the bulb connection). This was a PITA since there isn't much room for the clip to lock on the connector...good luck with this one!
Here's something to consider: Ariens also have a "Sno-Tek 24".
Comparing to the Compact 22, both have the same LCT 208cc engine and everything is almost exactly the same. I've noted the differences below.
Sno-Tek 24 is around $150-$200 cheaper in price.
Sno-Tek has a 24" width (Compact 22 has a 22" width).
Sno-Tek comes with a remote chute deflector (Compact 22 doesn't).
Sno-Tek has the aluminum gear case (Compact 22 has the cast iron and they claim its professional grade).
Sno-Tek has a black paint color (Compact 22 comes orange).
Compact models have a longer warranty; I think its one year more.
You be the judge on which one is the better deal.
One last thing to add...to choke for a cold start, the knob should be @ 6 o'clock like this: (I)
