just replaced my 1986 ariens 924 with this new ariens model 921030. this new unit is 254cc. and has 12 ft lbs of torque and is adveritised at 9 horse power. I choose the 28" model vs the 24" model because of the new auto turn feature which really makes this machine turn around easy at the end of the drive. the 24" model doesn't have the auto turn feature. my old unit I left the traction drive on only one wheel because with the drive lock engaged driving both wheels it was a struggle to turn the machine around. this new 921 with the auto turn feature drives both wheels and turns like only one wheel is locked in......... this is a great feature! the difference between the 24" and the 28" model is only 6lbs. (229 lbs for the 24 vs 235 lbs. for the 28") and handling difference is not even noticeable. the engine is quieter than my old unit and seems to have plenty of power. the auger control is solid and the crank for turning is located high on the machine so there's no bending over. the deflection shoot is steel and not plastic and is controlled on the all steel console next to the drive gear selector by a lever and spring loaded enclosed cable. the choke and throttle setup is a knob within a knob and takes some getting used to from the old two separate knob configuration my old one had. the engine comes standard with 110 volt electric start but no extension cord. easy on/off gas shut off, steel gas tank , ignition key, and primer bulb. the gearbox is cast iron (not aluminum) that drives the 14" augers and impeller. the augers are also serrated for grinding thru hard pack snow. the auger housing is solid steel with skid plates on each side that are reversible for double life.Read more ›

I bought a "deluxe" 28 in December 2013 and got to use it six times before it needed serious repair. The auger rake on the left side folded up against itself and jammed into the chute. I had to pry it out to see what was going on. At some point the shear pin finally broke. ( I have to assume it was after the rake bent up otherwise it wouldn't have bent) I contacted Ariens and explained that there was no way that the auger rake should fold up and that if the shear pin had served it's function there wouldn't have been a problem. Ariens response was that we must have hit something and that it's the owners responsibility to make sure that the machine only ingests snow. I told the rep (Greg) that all I was doing was blowing out the stuff pushed into the end of my driveway by the city plow. I asked if I am supposed to sift through every flake of snow before I use the blower to make sure it won't crumple up the auger.

Ariens feels that the cheap materials that they use now as opposed to the materials they used to use when they actually made a quality product are acceptable. Only if you don't ever expect to use the machine to clean your driveway.

Don't forget, this was even the deluxe model.

If you are searching for a new snow blower don't base your decision on the reputation of the old Ariens company. The current one makes garbage and will not stand behind it.

FOLLOW-UP

After writing my initial review I was contacted by a third representative of Ariens. After several communications between him, myself and the
dealer Ariens decided to pay for the parts and labor needed. He apologized for the problems I had with the other reps and said he still felt that his company does make a good product and wants to stand behind it.

After much research, my husband selected this Ariens 28" snow thrower. After using it a few times on snowfalls light and heavy, he is a very happy camper. He especially likes being able to move the throw chute remotely. This is a high-quality machine that does its job well.
