Editorial Reviews

Hollywood, Look I m Smiling is a laugh-out-loud and insightful comedy concert starring Mad TV s break-out star Aries Spears. Spears is in rare form as he tackles controversial topics such as political correctness , the Hollywood establishment and race relations in America. Filmed in front of a live audience at the Best Buy Theater in New York's, Times Square, Hollywood, Look I m Smiling is not only one of Spears strongest performances, it is also a no holds barred attempt to shed light on the hypocrisy of today s society....Spears refuses to play by the rules. Hollywood, Look I m Smiling is in your face, ironical and smart...but most of all its hilariously funny.

For years, I think Mad TV flew somewhat under the radar in the shadow of the more high profile and ever enduring SNL. However, Mad TV and its crew of misfits seemed edgier and more madcap--willing to take risks, even if not everything paid off. Aries Spears, on that show, showcased uncanny imitation abilities and an undeniable realness. Nobody effectively skewers the contemporary urban vibe as viciously as Spears can. So it's with pleasure to see him in his element in this Times Square concert where he edits himself to provide an extremely solid and balanced evening of comedy. If you are an avid follower of Spears, not everything here will be brand new--but if you are new to his comic stylings, you're in for a fitful night of entertainment.

As you might imagine, most of Spears set has to do with race relations in America. Eschewing political correctness, Spears lays it all out gently poking at just about every ethnic group imaginable. Race and gender differences have become such commonplace topics for comedians, it's getting harder and harder to make material that relies on stereotyping seem fresh. However, the likable Spears acquits himself well with a monologue that is as truthful as it can be offensive! And the audience loves it.

For the second half of the show, he changes things up a bit. There's a delightfully absurd send-up involving the movie Heat. And for my money, it is Spears' impersonation of legendary comedy writer Paul Mooney that provides the night's most hysterical moments. Even if you aren't familiar with Mooney (he worked with Pryor among others), this piece is brilliance and Spears' performance is priceless. Capping things off is a terrifically demented music video! Spears, as I said, uses some of his more popular material here and leaves out other stuff you might expect--but it is a well balanced show and a great introduction to Spears. KGHarris, 4/11.

I have to give it to Aries, he is a talented edgy comic. I hope he continues on and he breaks out even further. Not to mention his work on MAD TV, his quick comic wit, improv, and his ability to impersonate are great. His Pachino, DeNiro, Arnold, Denzel, are on point. He does Shaq better than Shaq!! Then his ability to mimic certain rappers LL, DMX, Snoop, and mainly Jay Z are unparalled. He can flow just as well as they do. The dvd here is pretty good although if you have seen Shaqs All Star Comedy Jam in Miami from 09 he does a lot of the same material and yet leaves some out. What is not in this DVD is his impersinations of the rappers mentioned above. Why I am not sure since this is something people really appreciate his talent at. As of this writing this dvd is currently being shown on HBO. He also takes a jab at the state of southern hip hop and has made up an alter ego. You have to see it. Check it yourself or check the all star weekend one as well on cable before you buy.
